IV. Synergistic Activities
(1) Community Service. I received a commendation from the Texas State Senate in 1993, and was awarded the Hiram J. Friedsam Award for Outstanding Community Service from the University of North Texas in 1996, for my efforts to plan and implement a safety-net health clinic in a medically underserved, minority community in north Texas. My work included working with a grassroots community groups to assess the need for a clinic, to design the clinic facility and services, to write the successful community development block grant to buy the land for the clinic, and to testify in city council meetings in support of the clinic. In 1999-2001, I was Principal Investigator on a grant from the Texas Advanced Research Program to conduct a study of a sample of patients in the JPS Health Care Network. The purpose of the research was to study issues related to access to health care in a safety-net system. We surveyed a sample of 2000 patients in 2001, including Hispanic and Vietnamese immigrants. I continue to serve on the Advisory Board of Partners Together for Health, the nonprofit foundation that supports the Tarrant County safety-net provider network, where I assist with grant proposals and fund-raisers.

(2) Graduate Education. I have chaired fifteen doctoral committees in sociology at the University of North Texas. Eleven of the committees I have chaired have produced dissertations on the topic of health care, two of which used the data from the JPS Health Network study from 1999-2001. Gertrude Owusu examined women’s health issues, and Keith Whitworth examined the barriers to access to health care among uninsured, low-income white ment. I also chaired a master thesis committee for a student in sociology, Courtney Queen, who used the thesis to examine issue related to access to health care among Hispanic immigrants.

(3) Undergraduate Education. In January 2003, I became the Assistant Director of the University Honors Program and am now the Associate Dean of the Honors College. My specific mandate is to develop the research component of the interdisciplinary undergraduate Honors program. New initiatives that I have developed include (1) an introductory research methods course for freshmen; (2) a junior level course in thesis proposal development; (3) a Spring research symposium; and (4) a new electronic journal for Honors research papers. Students are encouraged to present their research in national professional meetings and to publish in refereed journals. Students are also encouraged to get involved in hands-on research for pay or course credit at least by their sophomore year. I am currently chairing an undergraduate thesis committee in which the student is planning to analyze the data on the Vietnamese immigrants for the JPS Health Network study from 1999-2001.
