Dr. Dewain L. Lee – Bio

Dr. Dewain L. Lee has more than 22 years’ experience in higher education administration, particularly in student success program development aimed at preparing students; particularly minority students for success. She is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Development and Dean of Students at the University Alaska Anchorage. She is responsible for programs and services, which are designed to assist and support students in achieving academic and personal success. In her previous position as Dean of Students at Dillard University, she emphasized effective leadership and management, outreach, planning and effective program development to meet retention and student success goals.

Dr. Lee has used her role in higher education to make a presence and be an advocate for social causes and humanitarian efforts. Viewing education as the great equalizer, she spends her time lecturing and presenting on the importance of education, particularly higher education for minorities. Dr. Lee has used this platform to present career development and life preparation sessions at many of the New Orleans area public schools and at high schools in Anchorage, Alaska to both students and their parents. In an effort to empower parents of minority students, she was appointed by the Anchorage School Board to serve on the Multicultural Educational Concerns Advisory Committee. As a member of this committee, she advises the board on issues relating to multicultural students and their families. She is chair of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Alaska Leadership Council, where she works with the National UNCF Office to provide students in Alaska an opportunity to attend college through the administration and management of college scholarships.

In addition to lectures on education, Dr. Lee has presented keynote presentations and speaking engagements on personal and professional motivation, overcoming diversity, goal setting, hope and empowerment and challenges and issues facing African America Women and families all with a focus and underlying message of strength, courage and wisdom.

Dr. Lee holds membership is several professional organizations as well as an Honor Society. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and also holds the offices of Regional Vice President and member of the National Board of Directors as well as a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Foundation Board. Her other memberships include the American Counseling Association, the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the Alaska Women in Higher Education, the Young Leadership Council, the Southern Association of Pre-Law Advisors and NASPA the professional association for student affairs administrators in higher education. In addition, she serves on the Governing Board of the Mayoral Fellows Program to which she was appointed under New Orleans’ Mayor C. Ray Nagin. She is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the non-profit minority student development and mentoring foundation, Fountain of Youth Foundation in New Orleans Louisiana. She is also on the Board of Directors for STAR (Standing Together Against Rape) and well as a member of STAR’s Finance Committee. In addition to her professional memberships she also holds membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), the National Urban League and she is a member of the Links, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.

In addition Dr. Lee was selected by Ford Motor Company Fund as a 2012 Freedom Sister; which is an annual award sponsored in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute given to women for their dedication to social causes and humanitarian efforts.

Dr. Lee earned a Bachelor's degree in 1991 in Communication from the University of New Orleans, a Master's degree in 1996 from Xavier University and a Ph.D. In Organization and Management with a specialization in Human Resource Management from Capella University in 2007, and in 2008 she was awarded the American Counseling Association's Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award for her dissertation on Generation X in the workplace.
