Chapter Update – May 2018

By Kay White
Chapter Development Director

The 2016-2018 Council of Students tenure is coming to a close, and the staff at the national office would like to thank them for serving as the national committee of student engagement over these last two years.

Their commitment to the work that they have done on behalf of their chapters and student vice presidents at chapters throughout the nation is much appreciated.

The application period is now open for the 2018-2020 Council of Students.

The Council will meet for the first time at the 2018 Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 1-4, with all expenses covered by Phi Kappa Phi. The Council also will be expected to attend and take a leadership role in the Student Leadership Summit held in July 2019 at a location to be determined. The opportunity to serve on the Council requires a commitment to serve through the 2020 biennium, when the Society selects its next Council of Students. The selected Council members must maintain student status at their institution for at least one full year of the two-year term served on the Council.

The application for the Council can be found here. The deadline is May 25, 2018, and the announcement of the new Council will be made on June 10, 2018.

For more information or to share your chapter’s events with the national office, contact Kay White, Chapter Development Director, at kwhite@phikappaphi.org.

Phi Kappa Phi Chapters Promote Literacy Nationwide

Between February and April this spring, Phi Kappa Phi held its fifth annual Book Drive Competition. As part of the contest, 21 chapters across the country hosted drives to collect as many books as possible for an organization of their choice.

The book drives were held at both colleges and universities nationwide. Beneficiary organizations chosen by the chapters ranged from schools and libraries to other community organizations such as tutoring and mentoring programs, correctional centers and more. In all, the participating chapters collected more than 11,800 books!

The three winning chapters whose drives collected the most donations were:
  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott
  • University of Missouri–St. Louis
  • Western Illinois University

“We are grateful to the national Phi Kappa Phi Book Drive for having given our chapter a meaningful focus for community service,” said Dr. Jeanne Morgan Zarucchi, president of the UMSL chapter. “Our drive benefits children in a special tutoring program for families of ex-offenders, helping them share the Phi Kappa Phi ‘love of learning.’ ”

Winning chapters will receive a Little Free Library to place at a location of their choice. The Little Free Library is a freestanding box where anyone can donate and borrow books in an effort to promote literacy throughout communities—a prize that fits well with Phi Kappa Phi’s love of learning and literacy. In lieu of the Little Free Library, winning chapters have the option to receive a waived registration fee to attend the upcoming Phi Kappa Phi convention.

“Both our campus and local community have been incredibly supportive with our annual book drive,” said Dr. Anne Boettcher, president of the Embry-Riddle chapter. “This year we are excited to have collected for the Navajo Nation’s library at Window Rock and The Tuba City Public Library, which is designated a Family Place Library.”

Other Phi Kappa Phi chapters who hosted a book drive as part of the competition include Arkansas State University; California State University, Stanislaus; Clemson University; Eastern Kentucky University; Elmhurst College; Ithaca College; Louisiana State University; McKendree University; Methodist University; Murray State University; Nazareth College; Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi; Texas A&M University; University of Findlay; University of Florida; University of Maryland University College; University of South Alabama; and University of South Florida.

Since its creation in 2014, Phi Kappa Phi’s annual book drive competition has donated more than 45,000 books to organizations both locally and abroad.

Phi Kappa Phi Awards 2018 Excellence in Innovation Award to Western Michigan University

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines—today announced Western Michigan University as the 2018 recipient of its Excellence in Innovation Award. The $100,000 award, given biennially, recognizes WMU for achievement in finding a powerful solution to expanding higher education opportunities through the university’s Seita Scholars Program.

“Phi Kappa Phi is proud to recognize Western Michigan University for its innovative Seita Scholars Program,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “By lifting up an under-represented population—young people who have aged out of foster care—the university has transformed lives and offered hope to individuals who may never have dreamed a college degree was within reach.”

Established in 2008 as a signature initiative of WMU, the Seita Scholars Program is a comprehensive support system that aims to increase successful outcomes among young adults who have aged out of the foster care system in the state of Michigan. Scholars of the program receive a scholarship, year-round on-campus housing and one-on-one campus coaching for academic and personal support throughout their collegiate career.

Expanding on the success of the Seita Scholars Program, WMU established the Center for Fostering Success in 2012. The Center conducts research on foster care and higher education and has trained campus coaches for foster youth in nine states. The Center is also the home base for a statewide network—Fostering Success Michigan—that focuses on disseminating best practices and supporting other colleges and universities as they provide opportunities to former foster care youth.

WMU, on behalf of its efforts through the Seita Scholars Program and Center for Fostering Success, was selected as the 2018 recipient of the Excellence in Innovation Award by a jury of emeritus presidents during a two-part screening process. The university was first chosen as one of six semifinalists before advancing as one of three finalists. The pool of entries represented inventive, multifaceted projects at institutions across the United States. Each institution was assessed on its project’s ability to achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes to create systemic large-scale change.

“We are enormously pleased that Phi Kappa Phi has recognized both the innovative nature and the impact of our Seita Scholars Program. Our Seita Scholars Program has made a real difference in the lives of an amazingly resilient group of young people here on our campus,” said Dr. Edward B. Montgomery, president of WMU. “Through this program we've learned to rethink student support systems in a way that can be adapted by college and university communities around the nation. We are indebted to our staff and faculty who work alongside these students to make a real difference.”

WMU will accept the Excellence in Innovation Award at Phi Kappa Phi’s Biennial Convention in Minneapolis on August 3, 2018.

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi has awarded fellowships and grants to members and students on its chapter campuses. Currently, $1.4 million is awarded each biennium through programs that last year recognized over 350 individuals. The Excellence in Innovation Award, first awarded in 2016 to Tulane University, is the Society’s only award for institutions.

The call for submissions for the 2020 Excellence in Innovation Award will open in the fall of 2019. For more details and to see the finalist and honorable mention portfolios, please visit www.phikappaphi.org/innovation.

Phi Kappa Phi Initiates 14-Year-Old Student at University of California, Davis

On Tuesday, May 8, the University of California, Davis chapter of Phi Kappa Phi initiated more than 240 students, including one of the youngest members to ever join the Society, 14-year-old Tanishq Abraham.

From a very early age, Tanishq, a native of Sacramento, was fascinated by all things science. It was this love of learning that he channeled into his education and began to excel in academics.

At the age of 7, Tanishq started taking college courses at American River College, a community college in his hometown, while concurrently completing his high school degree. By 11 years old, he had earned three associate’s degrees from the college and graduated at this top of his class. At 12 years old, Tanishq was accepted into UC Davis and began studies in biomedical engineering during the fall of 2016.

“Being passionate about medical and engineering fields, I decided I would pursue a multidisciplinary field like biomedical engineering for my undergraduate degree,” explained Tanishq.

With his credits earned from American River College, Tanishq started at UC Davis as a junior and began working as an undergraduate research intern in the university’s Biomedical Engineering Department.

Just like any college student, he experienced the challenges that can accompany coursework, exams, studying and more. It was evident, though, that his hard work paid off when he received his invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi this spring. But Tanishq will be the first to admit that it hasn’t always been easy.

“I had to overcome challenges during my seven years of college life, mainly because of my very young age,” said Tanishq. “Many people thought that there is no way a young child can do it so I had to prove to them over and over again. Just like most college students who work hard, I have worked hard also.”

In addition to his academic achievements, Tanishq presented a talk at the Lunar Science Forum hosted by NASA’s Ames Research Center at just 9 years old, making him the youngest participant in the conference’s history. He has also served as an invited speaker for the SXSW Interactive Conference and delivered two TED Talks.

Tanishq, who will graduate from UC Davis in June, is gearing up for the next phase of his academic career: the pursuit of a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering. In January of this year, Tanishq was accepted into the biomedical engineering graduate program at UC Davis and received the Deans’ Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, which guarantees five years of funding.

No matter what follows for Tanishq after graduate school, it’s certain he will continue to be an inspiration to students of all ages.

“In his passion to learn and reach his goals, he has inspired many around the world since he was 7 years old,” said Tanishq’s parents, Dr. Taji and Bijou Abraham.

Apply for the Council of Students by May 25

Phi Kappa Phi is currently accepting applications for its 2018-2020 Council of Students. The Council, comprised of student vice presidents from chapters across the nation, serves as the student engagement committee for the Society.

Established in 2007, the Council is tasked with enhancing communication with student vice presidents, planning and hosting a student leadership conference, and interacting with student vice presidents in the Society’s five divisions, among other tasks.

The Council of Students, per the Society Bylaws, consists of no fewer than five members, representative of the student membership as a whole. These students will gain valuable leadership skills and will communicate regularly with staff at the national office and the two student representatives who serve on the Board of Directors.

“Being part of the Council made me feel an important part of my chapter. I made sure to help others feel important and essential as well,” said Ana Lu Ramirez, a 2016-2018 Council of Students member. “I mobilized my chapter and we accomplished events and chapter growth. We hosted a book drive and a member drive. It was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to all the students.”

The Council will meet for the first time at the 2018 Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 1-4, with all expenses covered by Phi Kappa Phi. The Council will also be expected to attend and take a leadership role in the Student Leadership Summit held in July 2019 at a location to be determined. The opportunity to serve on the Council requires a commitment to serve through the 2020 biennium, when the Society selects its next Council of Students. The selected Council members must maintain student status at their institution for at least one full year of the two-year term served on the Council.

“The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has given me numerous opportunities to expand my horizons outside the academic setting and get engaged in the community services,” said Amreen Mughal, a 2016-2018 Council of Students member. “Council of Students is a platform for me to connect with hundreds of other chapters to learn and effectively share new ideas to fulfill the motto of the Society, ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’ ”

Interested in applying? Download the Council of Students application for full eligibility requirements and submission instructions. All applications must be submitted via email to kwhite@phikappaphi.org by May 25, 2018.

Phi Kappa Phi Announces Finalists for Excellence in Innovation Award

Phi Kappa Phi today announced the three finalists for its 2018 Excellence in Innovation Award. The $100,000 award, given once per biennium, recognizes one institution of higher learning for achievement in finding powerful answers to important local, regional, national or global challenges.

The finalists, selected by a jury of emeritus presidents and provosts, were chosen from a pool of six semifinalists representing multifaceted projects at institutions across the nation. Each institution was assessed on the project’s ability to achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes to create systemic large-scale change.

The three institutions chosen as finalists are:

  • The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art
  • University of North Alabama
  • Western Michigan University

“The semifinalist institutions presented our jury with six fine examples of innovative projects they have successfully implemented on campus, in their community, or globally. Each distinct in its own right, all showcased creative approaches to the problem solving so essential in these times,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to recognize the three finalists as well as extend congratulations to the semifinalists whose projects merit honorable mention.”

The 2018 recipient will be announced Monday, May 21, and will receive $100,000 in tangible recognition of its best practice in response to the changes and challenges facing higher education in the 21st century. The award will be presented at the Society’s biennial convention on August 3 in Minneapolis.

The three semifinalist institutions receiving honorable mention are Elon University, Marquette University and California State University, Fresno.
