Member Spotlight – Tamara Knox

Born on base at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Tamara Knox is an award-winning photographer, photojournalist, business owner, and single mother. She received a bachelor’s degree in business management from California State University, Sacramento and an associate’s degree in photography from Sacramento City College.

After graduating, Tamara started a photography business, worked in the Cultural Awareness Center at Sacramento City College, and co-facilitated community workshops on therapeutic photography and writing. She returned to school in 2020 to pursue her goal of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by earning a master’s degree in social work at California State University, Stanislaus, where she was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi.

Tamara currently works for Beloved Survivors Trauma Recovery Center as a Master Social Worker and Mission Minded Media, an expert storytelling service for nonprofits, as a visual journalist and support person for trauma survivors who are storytelling participants.

Tamara sees photography as her way of blessing others, “I want to be a strong voice to help others. If something from my photographs captures my audience’s interest and causes something to be done about a disturbing situation, then I have done my part to help someone cope with their situation.”

Let’s get to know Tamara!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
I accepted the invitation because it was an honor to be invited. Phi Kapp Phi membership means that I am part of an organization that supports my academic excellence and future goals and aspirations.

What do you enjoy most about photography?
Photography is therapeutic and has been healing for me. It was the biggest motivator when I had to rebuild my life with my son.

What has been your most significant success in life?
My most significant success in life has been raising my son while attending graduate school.

Who was your role model growing up?
My role model growing up was my mom. She was a social worker. Although she was married, my dad was stationed miles away from home, so it was only my mom, brother, and I for years. I admired how she cared for us and worked as a social worker in group homes.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I’ve received is, “when you are at the bottom, the only way to go is up.” My parents encouraged me to do my best at everything I tried and always follow through with my commitments until the end.

What’s the first concert you ever went to?
The first concert I ever attended was by Kenny G, and Toni Braxton was his guest!

What drives you to be successful?
Supporting my son drives me to be successful. My faith in God and the support I receive from my wonderful role models in my colleagues, cohort members, friends, and family allow me to succeed.

How do you stay motivated?
I stay motivated through the encouragement and support of my family, friends, and colleagues.

If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would love to meet two people from the photography and social work fields—LIFE photographer Gordon Parks and one of the founders of PhotoTherapy, Judy Weiser. Gordon Parks was one of the first photographers whose social justice work inspired me to pursue visual journalism. Judy Weiser’s work was the foundation of my research for my culminating graduate studies exam.

What advice would you give your past self?
I would tell my past self always to stay true to and believe in herself and trust in God during trials and tribulations.

Phi Kappa Phi Honors Missy Hopper with a Named Dissertation Fellowship

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society—announced the designation of The Missy Hopper Dissertation Fellowship to honor her many years of service, devotion, and commitment to Phi Kappa Phi. The announcement was made at the opening session of the Society’s 47th convention held in Orlando, Florida on Aug. 4.

Hopper was Phi Kappa Phi’s president during the 2018-2020 biennium and recently rotated off the Society’s board of directors after a six-year term which included the roles of president-elect, president and past president.

“No one has been more effective or more dedicated as a Phi Kappa Phi leader. For that reason, I am beyond delighted to announce that we have named one of the fellowships The Missy Hopper Dissertation Fellowship,” said Society Past President Daniel Sandweiss.

The $10,000 Dissertation Fellowship is one of 15 the Society awards each year to active members who are doctoral candidates and are completing dissertations.

“I really appreciate it,” Hopper said. “I’ve loved my service. I look forward to continuing to support Phi Kappa Phi.”

Phi Kappa Phi Dissertation Fellowships are part of the Society’s robust portfolio of award and grant programs, which gives $1.3 million each year to outstanding members and students on chapter campuses through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

A Community in Bloom

When Phi Kappa Phi held its national convention in Orlando, Florida this summer, attendees enjoyed a venue decorated with flowers to brighten the surroundings, including blue and white hydrangeas and white roses.

The plants made a beautiful tableau for the Aug. 4-6 gathering at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. But the floral displays still looked gorgeous after three days of dazzling the convention’s nearly 200 participants, and it seemed a shame for them to go to waste. After previous conventions, flowers have gone to a variety of institutions, including nursing homes and hospitals.

But this year, at the suggestion of Phi Kappa Phi’s floral contractor, Cheryl’s Distinctive Creations, the Society’s convention flowers were donated to Pine Hills Elementary in Orlando, a public school serving some 600 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The blue and white hydrangeas seemed especially fitting for the campus since blue and white are Pine Hills' school colors.

As luck would have it, Darlene Walker of Cheryl’s Distinctive Creations delivered the flowers just as faculty and staff were gearing up for a new school year.

“Thank you for wearing your heart on your sleeve for the staff of Pine Hills Elementary,” Principal LaTonya Smathers said in a thank-you note sent to Phi Kappa Phi’s national office. “Your kind gesture motivated our staff to kick-start the new year with a heart filled with love!”

"We're delighted that the faculty, staff and students at Pine Hills Elementary in Orlando were able to enjoy the flowers that brightened our 2022 convention venue,” said Society Executive Director and CEO Bradley Newcomer. “Any time we can underscore Phi Kappa Phi's commitment to learning, that's a big plus for our members. In a few years from now, we hope that the young learners at Pine Hills can join our ranks as members, too."

The school motto at Pine Hills is “Begin with the End in Mind...Building our way to an ‘A.’”

A Legacy of Leadership

When Daniel Sandweiss handed over his gavel at the close of Phi Kappa Phi’s national convention in Orlando, Florida, he had lots of company as a past president. Five other past presidents attended the gathering at the Omni Resort at Championsgate – a happening so memorable that staff at the national office knew a picture was in order. The only challenge was assembling the previous leaders to get the shot.

Within Phi Kappa Phi, past presidents tend to be among the most enthusiastic – and widely circulating – attendees. Relieved of the responsibilities of leading the convention, they can mingle at will with the many Phi Kappa Phi friends they’ve made over the years. Put simply, they move around a lot, which is apparently why one past president, Gypsy Denzine, prefers tennis shoes while working the convention floor. These aren’t people who rose to Society leadership by standing still.

Even so, we managed to gather five past presidents at the Omni for a portrait. Each wears the Society medallion recognizing their service in Phi Kappa Phi’s top elected post.

Counting Sandweiss, Phi Kappa Phi had a total of six past presidents in attendance at the 2022 convention. Their presence underscored the long tradition of past presidents remaining active in the Society even after their term of service is over.

Phi Kappa Phi’s governance structure encourages this kind of participation. After they leave the presidency, past presidents remain on the Board of Directors another two years to help advise the new president. (President-elects also have a two-year term on the board to help prepare for the top post.)

“I was extremely fortunate to succeed Missy Hopper and to benefit from her mentorship and support over many years, including the last two while she has been past president,” Sandweiss said, also crediting Lora Becker, who succeeded him, for her counsel. As Sandweiss put it, “whatever good has come from my presidency could not have happened without this effective and truly enjoyable collaboration.”

As Hopper cycled off the Society’s governance board in Orlando, she pledged to stay involved in Phi Kappa Phi. Obviously, that’s something the Society’s past presidents love to do.

Literacy Spotlight: 100 Ways to Nutritional Literacy

To kick off our monthlong celebration of Literacy Month, we're shining a spotlight on a 2022 Literacy Grant recipient—Dr. Victor Mack and his 100 Ways to Nutritional Literacy program.

The 100 Ways to Nutritional Literacy program aims to increase traditionally marginalized populations by understanding the link between nutrition and health. Mack, with the help of 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte, plans to achieve this by hosting five cooking classes. Participants will learn how to properly read food labels, utilize the food pyramid, avoid foods with negative health consequences, understand cholesterol, calculate food quantities and more. In addition, the program demonstrates how diet impacts academic performance and promotes a healthy lifestyle for participants.

The program aims to reach 200 middle and high school students in the Charlotte region. Participants will be evaluated based on journal entries, logs and an exciting final program formatted like “MasterChef Junior”.

Mack is the Vice-President for Education for The 100 and serves as the Director of Educational Outreach for the University of North Carolina Charlotte Cato College of Education. The 100’s core value is mentorship with a focus on African American youth, giving these students the opportunity to engage with professionals and resources at a higher learning institution.

The funds from the Literacy Grant will go towards food for cooking classes, aprons and books for 80 participants.

Traveling Generosity

Thanks to her McKenzie Study Abroad Grant from Phi Kappa Phi this year, Felicia Helmlinger got a $1,000 stipend to spend part of her summer in Chile. She also got a little something extra: homemade ice cream at the home of Wendell and Georgie McKenzie, the couple who decided to support one of the Society’s Study Abroad Grants several years ago.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. A total of 125 $1,000 grants were awarded this year.

Applicants do not have to be Society members but must attend an institution with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Applicants also must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Helmlinger is in her senior year this fall at University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she’s majoring in international studies with a concentration in Spanish. Helmlinger had previously traveled abroad to Nicaragua, where she visited the coastal village of Jiquillo. “Climate change is not coming; it is already here. Hundreds of families who settled on the coast to support their fishing livelihood have lost their homes to sea level rise,” Helmlinger mentioned in her grant application.

Helmlinger sought a Study Abroad Grant to stay in Viñ del Mar, another coastal community in Chile. “My goal is to improve my Spanish oral communication skills to deepen my interpersonal relationships and broaden my future professional opportunities so I can support more communities locally and internationally,” Helmlinger wrote.

Since Helmlinger lives not far from the McKenzies’ Cary, North Carolina residence, it was easy for her to visit them this summer before her trip to Chile. The McKenzies served homemade ice cream to their honored guest. “Felicia Helmlinger is a gem! She is bright, engaging, talented, and eager to serve,” said Wendell McKenzie, a former national president of Phi Kappa Phi and an Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus at North Carolina State University. “Her study abroad in Chile will surely augment her UNC Wilmington international studies major and Spanish minor.”

The McKenzies have been able to meet with nearly all of the recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant that bears their name. “Georgie’s and my interest in study abroad grew out of our own international experience,” McKenzie said. “Decades ago, our family lived in Sweden while I participated in a research sabbatical in Stockholm. This was an extremely valuable time for our entire family: gaining exposure to varied cultures, witnessing beauty and wonder beyond our own shores – in short, broadening our perspectives.”

McKenzie said he and his wife have been inspired by their meetings with recipients of McKenzie Study Abroad Grants. “The gratitude they express, the excitement they share, the experiences they gained clearly indicate our investment was minuscule compared with the wonderful return,” he said. “It is one of the best things we have done for others.”

Start Planning Your Chapter Fall Service Project

This year marks the third annual Fall Service Project initiative hosted by the Society’s Council of Students. Chapters are encouraged to participate in the planning and execution of a local service project that focuses on a specific need in their community or on their campus.

The service project can take place for any length of time from Sept. – Nov. One chapter from each division will be honored for their commitment to the community with a $200 monetary contribution to each chapter’s partner community organization from the national office.

“The 2021 Fall Service Project was an unforgettable experience in our chapter. We had the opportunity to work with 23 university student associations to collect school materials and books for three orphanages in Puerto Rico,” said Council of Student member Nicole Gonzalez. “It was an excellent opportunity to promote our love of learning, give back to the community, and to make ourselves known both at the university and in our community. I encourage other chapters to get involved to make an impact in your community and be of service to others!”

This year, the Phi Kappa Phi national office staff will hold its own Fall Service Project by partnering with Baton Rouge non-profit Clean Pelican in a “Clean Community Event” on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Phi Kappa Phi chapters in the vicinity of Baton Rouge are invited and welcome to participate. Chapters interested in a similar service project can partner with Keep America Beautiful affiliates; find an affiliate here.
