Member Spotlight – Gabriel Horton

Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, Gabriel Horton was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 2022 while studying cybersecurity at Augusta University. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree earlier this year and is spending his summer at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a Criminal and Cyber Intelligence Analyst Intern.

In addition to interning at NASA, Gabriel has interned with the United States Secret Service and the U.S. Army Cyber Command. He hopes to return to AU to pursue a master’s in information security management soon.

During his time at AU, Gabriel won several awards, including the University’s English & World Languages Chair’s Award and the CyberCorps® Scholarship for Service. He participated in the Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition, Cybertronic Makers’ Club and AU’s Association of Computer and Machinery.

Gabriel enjoys serving his community as an acolyte at his local church and volunteering with local community service programs that assist those experiencing homelessness.

Let’s get to know Gabriel!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
Joining Phi Kappa Phi recognized my academic achievements and commitment to excellence. It validates my hard work and dedication. I accepted the invitation for the recognition of academic achievement, networking, resume building, access to numerous resources, and the ability to engage in community service and leadership activities.

What did you enjoy most about interning with the United States Secret Service?
Gaining valuable experience, real-world application, and insight into an agency using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) cybersecurity.

What piece of advice would you share with someone entering college?
My advice would be to set realistic goals, manage your time, prioritize academic tasks, seek help when needed, join organizations and clubs that align with your interests, and don’t forget about self-care.

Where does your passion for cybersecurity come from?
It originated back in high school when I was selecting my career pathway. I attended Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School, which focuses on STEM, and took a cybersecurity course that solidified my decision to pursue the field.

What is your favorite movie?
There are many, but if I had to choose one, it would be Spider-man, Into the Spider-Verse, because I like the characters, the animation style, and especially the story.

Have you ever had a nickname?
As a small child, my nickname from my grandfather was “Butterball.” He gave me this name because I was fat. Thank goodness, I slimmed down as the years went by.

What is your favorite sports team? Do you attend their games?
For college, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football, and for a professional football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Do you cook?
Well, I dabble. I don’t cook meals, but I make things I like, such as scrambled eggs, peanut butter cookies, and pancakes.

Do you enjoy traveling?
Yes, I enjoy traveling. My favorite vacation is at Disney World. This was my 2023 graduation gift to me from my parents. It was a family trip, and it was fun.

Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without?
I cannot go a day without thanking God.

Extend the Conversation: Fond Summer Camp Memories

In our new summer issue of Forum, Roger Mummert wistfully recalls that empty nest feeling as his two daughters went off to summer camp. If you missed Roger’s story, you can read it here.

What are your fondest memories of summer camp? For Forum editor, Danny Heitman, it involved weeks spent at Camp Grant Walker in rural Louisiana, which served kids who were members of the 4-H Club. He still recalls the almost deafening sound of frogs and crickets as they dozed in their bunks each night. Do you have similar recollections of summer camp?

Extend the conversation and share your favorite summer camp memories. Who knows? You might, in telling your story, manage to connect with a fellow former campmate.

Congratulations to the 2023 Inaugural Pioneer Award Recipients

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines—today announced the recipients of a 2023 Pioneer Award. The $1,000 awards were given to 50 Phi Kappa Phi members nationwide.

The Pioneer Awards, in its inaugural year, are designed to encourage and reward undergraduate members for developing the research, engagement and leadership skills necessary to become a successful scholar.

“It is a pleasure to recognize our inaugural cohort of 50 Pioneer Award winners this year. This new award focuses on supporting opportunities for our undergraduate scholars during this critical phase of their academic journey,” said Society Executive Director and CEO, Bradley R. Newcomer. “It is our hope that this award program will continue to grow and allow Phi Kappa Phi to deepen our support of academic excellence and service to others across all academic disciplines well into the future.”

The selection process for a Pioneer Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, honors and awards, relevant research experience, service and leadership experience, on and off campus, a personal statement and letter of recommendation.

The Pioneer Award is the newest addition to the Society’s robust portfolio of award and grant programs, which gives $1.3 million each year to outstanding students and members through graduate and dissertation fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. Phi Kappa Phi is proud to offer an award exclusively for undergraduates and this program is a welcome addition to the Society's portfolio.

For the complete list of recipients, visit www.PhiKappaPhi.org/2023Pioneer. The application process for the 2024 Pioneer Awards will open on Dec. 15, 2023.
