Could You Be the Next Love of Learning Recipient?

Phi Kappa Phi’s Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members, including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

For members like Aaron Ragsdale, a music professor at South Dakota State University, the award can help them reach a goal along their journey. As a 2021 Love of Learning Award recipient, Ragsdale used the funds to continue his professional development by attending an international percussion conference — one of the largest gatherings of percussion educators, performers and professionals devoted to furthering the percussive arts and education.

As an educator, Ragsdale says his professional goals lie “largely in inspiring my students to be lifelong learners in their field and preparing them to pass on the enthusiasm they bring to their chosen field of study on to their subsequent students.”

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards of $500 each annually in support of members. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals and a personal statement.

Ragsdale was initiated in 2016 at SDSU. “The Love of Learning Award program has allowed me to continue my professional development across venues that might otherwise fall outside the scope of support from my institution,” said Ragsdale. “The best part of Phi Kappa Phi is its continued commitment to supporting its community of leaders and learners.”

The deadline to apply is June 30. To learn more about the award and see full eligibility requirements, click here.

ΦKΦ Member Spotlight

After growing up in Wagoner, Oklahoma, Patrick Curley headed to Lubbock, Texas, to attend Texas Tech University. There he joined the football team, earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi. This year, he's continuing his stint at Texas Tech to work on an MBA and spend one more year on the football field as a Red Raider.

Though his time as a student-athlete has presented challenges through injuries and the pandemic, he has continued to succeed. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA in mechanical engineering with a minor in mathematics, he was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America as First-Team Academic All-District and landed a spot in the Big 12 Conference as First-Team Academic All-Big 12. He has also earned the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award which is the Big 12 Conference's highest academic achievement award.

Outside of the library and the football field, he stays involved with the community – both on and off campus. He has served as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and organized career development and community engagement opportunities for his peers. He also spent time volunteering at food banks, elementary schools, an animal shelter and the Salvation Army. "I initially volunteered in hopes of impacting the community, but I soon realized that they were actually the ones having the most significant impact on my life," he said.

Let's get to know Patrick!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
I had become edified of the honor and integrity of Phi Kappa Phi early in my academic journey. Therefore, when I received the invitation to join, I was elated and could not act quickly enough. Phi Kappa Phi means so much more to me than just academic recognition. It is even more than a well-established historical honor society. As cliché as it may sound, it is a family.

What kind of music do you prefer?
As a native of rural northeast Oklahoma, I love listening to country music and gospel. It has even been argued that we very well may have learned the songs of Blake Shelton or Toby Keith before our ABCs.

Who is your favorite sports hero?
Tim Tebow, an incredible athlete but an even better man. A selfless leader who displayed what true character is – on and off the field.

What do you enjoy most about engineering?
Engineering to me is the opportunity to leave the world a better place than when you arrived. Everything today in modern-day society contains a marvel of engineering. Most of all, the protection and longevity of our great planet depends on breakthroughs in science and engineering, and it is up to myself and all fellow engineers across the globe to act now.

What has been your most significant success in life?
I believe that I have been extraordinarily blessed with many successes. However, if I were to choose my most defining success, I would ultimately choose graduating at the top of my class with a 4.0, all while studying one of the most challenging majors at the university, competing full-time as a student-athlete, completing multiple internships, leading a student organization and completing over 80+ hours of volunteering.

What have you learned about teamwork from your experiences on teams?
Teamwork that is executed effectively is truly an art form – deeply rooted and reliant upon communication, selflessness and a common goal. It has revealed the gift of comradery, the power of friendship and the fulfillment of serving a much bigger purpose than any one person. Teamwork has taught me not to think less of myself but think of myself less.

What do you hope to accomplish professionally in the next five years?
In the next five years, I hope to overachieve my expectations for myself. I hope I consistently surpass goals that are followed by higher standards. But most of all, I hope to make a difference in the world – for the better.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sports?
I am a sucker for poetry. It began as fascination and appreciation for such eloquently placed words but was soon followed by an innocent mimicry and passion-filled poems.

What is your favorite podcast?
I am not sure if it qualifies as a podcast, but I like to use Headspace periodically throughout the week – for focusing, letting go of stress or just winding down!

What is your favorite subject in school?
I suppose if I were honest, I would reveal my nerdiness, but on second thought, it has probably already been exposed at this point. Therefore, I would say math and science are my favorite subjects. I enjoyed these most due to the logic that was associated with them. Something about how I am wired allowed the subjects to "click" in my brain.

Member Mentions – April 2022

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi's international community is a unique blend of students, academicians, and corporate and civic leaders from all fields of endeavor. From their time in school to their professional career, Society members’ hard work continues to pay off and be acknowledged.

Phi Kappa Phi would like to congratulate these members on their recent achievements:

Allen Li (Auburn University) has been named as a 2022 Truman Scholar. The political science and economics double major dedicates himself to making Auburn's campus more inclusive and accessible. The Truman Scholarship was created by Congress in 1975 and aims to support aspiring public service leaders in the United States.

Phi Kappa Phi Annual Report Showcases Achievements of 2021

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi today announced the publication of its 2021 Annual Report.

The report, themed Lighting the Future, showcases a number of achievements of the past year made possible through the generosity of donors to Phi Kappa Phi. Because of this generous support, the Society was able to expand upon its mission in 2021 to recognize and promote academic excellence.

“We’re proud to highlight some of our remarkable award recipients in this year’s annual report. Their love of learning, focus on academic excellence and commitment to service embody the spirit of Phi Kappa Phi,” said Society Executive Director and CEO Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer. “Despite the many challenges the pandemic brought to us over the past couple of years, our members continued to demonstrate their commitment to academic excellence and service to others through their donations and volunteer service. For that we are thankful as we continue our journey into a bright future.”

The report features a stunning design with photos and infographics, stories of Phi Kappa Phi award recipients and members, chapter happenings and much more.

Highlights of the 2021 Annual Report include:

Stories and testimonials from recipients of Phi Kappa Phi awards.
  • The increase of the Society’s Fellowship program to more than $650,000 annually.
  • An inspirational story of a member’s journey of support.
  • A story recognizing a member's graduate research project that chronicles the COVID-19 pandemic through postcards and photography.
  • Stories and highlights from chapter service projects.
  • Listing of Phi Kappa Phi donors.

Volunteer Spotlight: Ruth Palmer

Phi Kappa Phi continues its annual celebration of National Volunteer Week by hearing from another long-time volunteer within the Society. As an organization dependent upon volunteer board members, committee members and chapter officers serving on more than 300 college campuses, Phi Kappa Phi could not be where it is today without their commitment to service.

Ruth Palmer was invited to join the Society in 2003 and was encouraged to join by one of her colleagues. She also saw membership as a learning opportunity. "I was convinced that I would learn about ways to further help my teacher-education students participate in an organization that represented all levels of higher education. That turned out to be true," she said.

Having grown up surrounded by family and teachers who modeled community service and volunteerism as something to be expected, Palmer continued that tradition throughout her schooling and career. "When I became a high school teacher, I volunteered to help students at-risk for school failure. As a principal at an all-girls high school, I introduced in-school volunteerism as an essential for academic success. In higher education, and with volunteerism as part of the academic expectation, I chose to expand my own learning," she shared. "Phi Kappa Phi allows me to advance the work of students across all parts of higher education."

On a national level with Phi Kappa Phi, she has chaired the Fellowship and Graduate Research Committees and currently sits on the Pioneer Program Development Committee. "Serving on the awards committees as I have, is an incredible mixture of challenging and exhilarating," said Palmer. "The applications make very transparent the outstanding and engaging work in which students are involved and provide insight into their aspirations to excellence, their agency and future orientation."

Palmer sees volunteering as a commitment to the mission of an organization. "This organization offers an opportunity to the community of higher education scholars to participate in service to others; it is an extension of scholars’ primary academic obligation to the scholarship of teaching research and service," she said. "Volunteering is also a learning experience. Faculty participants in Phi Kappa Phi benefit from growing into the role of advocate for students and advocates for excellence."

Extend the Conversation: Back on Main Street

Our spring 2022 issue of Forum focused on the theme of reading and included a feature about the rebounding of independent bookstores. In it, Lewis Buzbee discusses his local independent bookstore and touches on the larger question of what makes these places so special. If you missed the essay, you can read it here.

What's your favorite local bookstore where you live, and what makes it appealing for you? Would you suggest it to a visitor to your city and, if so, why?

We’d love to hear from you, and feel free to share pictures, too. Extend the conversation in our online member community Link.

Please note, our online community is available to active members only, and you will be required to log in with your Phi Kappa Phi credentials. For login assistance, email webmaster@phikappaphi.org.

Volunteer Spotlight: Emilie Brown

As an organization built and sustained by a network of volunteers, Phi Kappa Phi is excited to celebrate National Volunteer Week by shining a spotlight on their great work. The week, held annually on the third week of April, is an opportunity to recognize their impact on the Society, their school campuses and the world at large.

Emilie Brown serves as the chapter president at Youngstown State University and is one of the many Society volunteers who serve as board members, committee members and chapter officers on more than 300 campuses across the United States, its territories and the Philippines. Their commitment, service and hard work supports our mission of recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education.

Brown has been a member of Phi Kappa Phi since 2005 and has served as an officer with the YSU chapter since 2012. Though her mentor and the Society benefits convinced her to join, other chapter officers were who encouraged her to become active as a volunteer. "My first involvement with an initiation ceremony after my own was actually filling in for a committee member who couldn't attend the ceremony and asked me to take her place," said Brown. "I've attended every induction since!"

For Brown, the rewards of serving as a volunteer have come from the support the chapter has been able to offer the students. "I am proud of our chapter's long and active history on our campus and even more proud of the thousands of dollars in local scholarships we have awarded to our students. Recognizing excellence and supporting deserving students is most rewarding to me. I also truly appreciate the other Board members and having the opportunity, through our chapter, to work with faculty, staff, and students across campus that I might not otherwise interact with."

Whether she's helping with initiations, scholarships or chapter events, Brown finds inspiration in many ways through her service and encourages others to do the same. "The return on your commitment to volunteer with Phi Kappa Phi is worth the investment. Especially with an organization like Phi Kappa Phi, dedicated to honoring the love of learning and service to the community, you can't help but feel like you are part of a very special organization," she said.

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson Initiated into Phi Kappa Phi

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, was inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale chapter's initiation held on April 11. During the ceremony in Morris Library's John C. Guyon Auditorium on the SIU Carbondale campus, Johnson was presented with a lifetime membership in the Society.

While visiting the school, Johnson also discussed “Leading the Fight for Justice, Equity and Equality” in the Student Center Ballrooms with a meet and greet held after the speaking engagement.

“It is truly monumental to have Mr. Derrick Johnson visit SIU and the Carbondale community,” said LaShonda M. Stewart, director of the Chancellor’s Scholars Program, in a release from the school. Stewart and Johnson were classmates at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. “His visit is highly significant because he could have visited any other university, but he chose to visit us. It will be a wonderful occasion to highlight and reinforce SIU’s commitment to antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion.”

As the NAACP leader, Johnson remains on the frontlines of today's most important civil rights issues and works to continually elevate the Association's visibility and voice on a national level.

During the Phi Kappa Phi initiation ceremony, SIU Carbondale Chapter President LaShonda Stewart welcomed students and officiated the ceremony. In addition to Johnson, SIU System President Dan Mahony; Sheila Caldwell, chief diversity officer of the SIU System; Randolph Burnside, director of the Medical Education Preparatory program with the SIU School of Medicine; and 38 SIU Carbondale graduate and undergraduate students were inducted as members.

Announcing the 2022 Phi Kappa Phi Week Chapter Awards

Phi Kappa Phi and the Council of Students are proud to announce the recipients of the 2022 Phi Kappa Phi Week Awards. During the first week of February, chapters were encouraged to celebrate member achievements and host activities that increased chapter awareness across the campus. This year’s activities included information tables with giveaways, social media campaigns and Valentine’s Day cards!

The chapters selected for the awards are:
  • Angelo State University
  • Caldwell University
  • Mercer University
  • University of West Georgia
Angelo State University (Chapter 321) planned and executed a social media campaign and used a university sponsored marketing effort to increase awareness and encourage eligible students to join. During the week, their Facebook page reached 22,256 users. They created ten different posts that highlighted Phi Kappa Phi Week and featured officers with biographical information. They also created slides that were shared on the campus monitors in the University Center.

Caldwell University (Chapter 335) set up a display table next to the bookstore and staffed it for four to five hours a day for the entire week. The table displayed the Phi Kappa Phi flag with the motto, a tablecloth with the logo, a fact sheet, a benefits page display and copies of the Forum. The chapter also hosted a lecture, “COVID-19 Omicron Variant and Health Considerations,” presented by Associate Professor of Biology, Dr. Agnes Berki.

Mercer University (Chapter 235) created a LinkedIn account and used it and their Twitter account to post Phi Kappa Phi advertisements, member spotlights and chapter news. They sent eligible potential student members an invitation letter, an initiation ceremony announcement and invitations to have professional headshots. Posters were hung and print media advertisements were distributed across the Macon and Atlanta campuses, and campus monitors broadcasted Phi Kappa Phi ads and fact sheets.

The University of West Georgia (Chapter 150) partnered with the Honors College to make Valentine's Day cards for patients in local hospitals and residents in local nursing homes. The Honors College provided materials for the cards such as paper, scissors and glue, and the chapter provided snacks, beverages and markers. In addition, they installed a Phi Kappa Phi exhibit at the university's library.

The Society and the Council of Students are proud of the efforts of each of the participating chapters during Phi Kappa Phi Week and are hopeful these activities will inspire other chapters to do the same on their campuses. Each of the four chapters selected will be awarded a $200 monetary contribution from the national office in recognition of their work. If you have any questions, please contact Edward White, assistant director of chapter services, at ewhite@phikappaphi.org.
