Phi Kappa Phi Awards 2022 Excellence in Innovation Award to Longwood University

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi today announced Longwood University as the 2022 recipient of its Excellence in Innovation Award. The $100,000 award, given biennially, recognizes Longwood University for its achievement in finding a powerful solution to explore unresolved civic issues through the Brock Experiences for Transformational Learning program.

“Today we celebrate Longwood University’s teaching of civic engagement through a model of embedding transformational learning in their core curriculum,” said Society Executive Director and CEO Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer. "Longwood’s innovative courses and pedagogies supported by the Brock Experiences Program exemplify the transformative solutions our Excellence in Innovation Award is designed to recognize.”

Kickstarted in 2016, Brock Experiences are Longwood’s suite of signature courses that take students outside of the traditional classroom to explore unresolved civic issues while preparing them for both citizenship and success after college. The courses are focused on three central components, an unresolved civic issue, place-based pedagogy and transdisciplinary inquiry for more integrated learning. Through these transformative experiences, students develop skills to understand matters of civic importance from a variety of perspectives while building capacity to engage these matters as citizen leaders.

To facilitate the creation of the courses, the university established innovative faculty fellowships designed to provide the foundational skills necessary to achieve such a field course while also supporting the broader educational goals of the institution — the development of citizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions to the common good of society.

Longwood, on behalf of its efforts through the Brock Experiences for Transformational Learning, was selected as the 2022 recipient of the Excellence in Innovation Award by a jury during a two-part screening process. The university was first chosen as one of six semifinalists before advancing as one of three finalists. The pool of entries represented inventive, multifaceted projects at institutions across the United States. Each institution was assessed on its project’s ability to achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes to create systemic large-scale change.

“Longwood is proud of the innovative work of our faculty who have developed pedagogical methods that engage students in unresolved civic issues in places as far afield as Yellowstone National Park, Alaska, the Arizona borderland, the Colorado River basin, and the Chesapeake Bay,” said Longwood President, W. Taylor Reveley IV. “We are grateful to Phi Kappa Phi for this meaningful award, which we hope will encourage others in higher education who are serious about preparing students for democracy, and which will help support our programs here, allowing more Longwood students to participate in these transformative learning experiences.”

Longwood will accept the Excellence in Innovation Award at Phi Kappa Phi’s Biennial Convention in Orlando, Florida on August 5, 2022.

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi has awarded fellowships and grants to members and students on its chapter campuses. Currently the Society gives more than $1 million through its award and grant programs that last year recognized over 300 individuals. The Excellence in Innovation Award, first awarded in 2016, is the Society’s only award for institutions.

ΦKΦ Member Spotlight

Cassandra Reynolds grew up in the small Virginia town of Berryville in the Northern Shenandoah Valley. She recalls a time when there were only two stoplights in the town – it has now graduated up to three!

Shortly after earning a bachelor's degree in business administration, she took a position with a law firm where she still works nearly four decades later. Serving as the senior pro bono coordinator for the George Hettrick Community Law Center in Church Hill, she manages the office which targets its services to impoverished areas and the working poor.

Last year, Cassandra made the decision to head back to school at Virginia Commonwealth University to pursue a master's degree in public administration. She was initiated into VCU's Phi Kappa Phi chapter this past fall. She has also graduated from three leadership programs including the HIGHER Ground Women’s Leadership Program and the Minority Political Leadership Institute, both housed under the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute at VCU. In 2021, she also graduated from Leadership Metro Richmond.

Outside of work, Cassandra volunteers through her church, the READ Center, SupportOne, Higher Achievement and more. Her work has been recognized with many achievements including being selected as one of the local YWCA's Outstanding Women Award recipients in the Human Relations & Faith in Action category.

Her hobbies keep her active, too, and include karaoke, hip hop line dancing, softball and roller skating.

Let's get to know Cassandra!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
Besides the National Honor Society in high school, I’ve never been recognized for any other academic achievement. When I received the invitation, I was genuinely a bit confused and immediately thought that maybe someone was playing a joke. But after determining it was the real deal, I was so proud and honored to be included with individuals whose academic accomplishments are amazing and expansive. To be included with such individuals is an honor and privilege I don’t take lightly.

If you could go back in time, what event would you want to see or be a part of?
Either one of the marches or speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Given our current times, his words, his purpose, and his example are needed now more than ever. To be a part of that movement would be life-changing, even with the brutality that came with it.

What's your go-to productivity hack?
I set a time and challenge myself to get a task or project done by the projected time. I set up a system that helps keep the process on track, block out distractions and move the process along with a single-minded purpose.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
There are too many to name, but my best friend and her sisters lived next door to me. She passed away in 2016. We were always playing in their yard or mine. There were no concerns about random shootings or children being kidnapped. We could walk downtown and leave our door open without worrying about someone walking in and taking something. I guess it is the simplicity of life that I remember most.

What motivates you to mentor the youth?
My current role as a Higher Achievement mentor is serving as an eighth-grade high school placement mentor, preparing and assisting eighth graders in applying to specialty high schools other than their zone school. I feel like my role is not to teach them – they have teachers. My role is to try to supplement what they are learning in school and, more importantly, be a seed planter. I try to provide them the benefit of my experience and knowledge and plant seeds that hopefully others will water and nurture, resulting in well-rounded and successful individuals when they leave my influence.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
Frog legs are about as weird as it has ever gotten for me.

What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
I am proud of the fact that I have been with one firm since graduation, now going into my 38th year. While I have had several positions within the firm over time, the one I currently hold gives me great satisfaction and autonomy. I am respected by both my peers and superiors for what I do. That means more to me than anything.

What was your first job?
My first job was in high school at Doubleday Publishing Company's local production and shipping plant in my hometown. My dad worked and subsequently retired from there. I worked on the shipping line packing book orders. It taught me that there is value in hard work, and there is nothing like having your own money! But it also taught me that manufacturing/plant work was not something I really wanted to do over the long haul.

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Realize that knowledge IS power. I feel like I learned that too late in life – even after graduating from college. Absorb all the information and knowledge you can. Surround yourself with smarter people who know more than you so that they can impart what they know to you. Ignorance is not bliss. We see that to be the case now more than ever. Keep learning and keep growing. You can only be better for it when you do.

What is your favorite book?
Makes Me Wanna Holler by Nathan McCall. He tells the story of his troubled youth to become a professional journalist. He says that poverty, terrible home life and lack of education aren’t always the easy answers for what prevents us from succeeding. He says, “The problems among us are more complex than something we can throw jobs, recreation centers, social programs or more policemen at.” He describes how young Black men feel they have no option in a society that devalues them, and he tries to maintain self-respect by going against everything the white system stands for by adopting the pose of the outlaw and a code of macho violence. While in prison, he became a disciplined reader and thinker and transformed himself.

Up for Discussion: Conversations with Historical Figures

As we prepare the fall edition of the Phi Kappa Phi Forum, we're asking members to contribute their ideas to the theme of conversation. We enjoy reading your responses and will be choosing a sample to share in the magazine.

For 2022, each edition of Forum will center on a different theme beginning with reading, then continuing with writing, conversation and the art of speech. We welcome your feedback.

Who's the historical figure with whom you'd most want to have a conversation, and why? "I suppose Abraham Lincoln comes to mind for me because he seemed like such a complicated and gifted character," said Danny Heitman, Forum editor.

Share your response to our question by replying to this discussion in our online member community Link. Responses of no more than three or four sentences are recommended, and we look forward to reading your contributions. We'll publish some of your answers in the "Up for Discussion" feature of our fall magazine.

The community is available to active members only, and you will be required to log in with your Phi Kappa Phi credentials. For login assistance, email webmaster@phikappaphi.org.

Member Feature: It's Never Too Late

As full-time parents and employees, going to graduate school wasn’t the easiest task for Catherine and Jeremiah “JJ” McDaniel, but in the end, the achievement was well worth it. The balance between work, school and parenting led to many late nights and early mornings to complete assignments.

“We were each other’s motivation, support and inspirations,” said Catherine McDaniel.

Catherine and JJ obtained their master’s degrees from the University of Maryland Global Campus, where they both held a 4.0 GPA and were initiated into Phi Kappa Phi. Catherine graduated in human resource management and JJ in acquisitions and supply chain management. “Phi Kappa Phi is highly revered, and it was a goal from day one to get that recognition. Once we started our master’s degree journey, it turned into a fun competition between the two of us to see who could obtain the better GPA,” said Catherine McDaniel.

When asked what advice she would give parents who are thinking of going back to graduate school, Catherine says not to be scared, ask for help and establish good relationships with your professors. “I want my boys to know that mom and dad worked really hard to achieve a great goal. That through a pandemic, work and the million other directions we were pulled into, we were able to push ourselves to overcome everything.”

The McDaniels are high school sweethearts, have been married for 10 years and currently reside in Herndon, Virginia, with their two sons, Jacob, 7, and Logan, 3.

Extend the Conversation: Reading to My Mother

Our spring 2022 issue of Forum focused on the theme of reading and included an essay written by Phyllis Theroux. In it, she recalls reading to her elderly mother after her vision declined. If you missed the essay, you can read it here.

Many of us have fond memories of reading storybooks aloud to our children. "I can still recall, for example, reading a funny book about a garbage truck to my son when he was small. It was called I Stink, and of course he loved all the icky imagery," said Danny Heitman, Forum editor.

What books have you especially enjoyed reading aloud to your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews? We’d love to hear from you, and feel free to share pictures, too. Extend the conversation in our online member community Link.

Forum 15: Conversation

With each edition of the Society's Forum magazine, "Forum 15" highlights elements of popular culture related to the theme. Our goal is to affirm that the ideas we discuss in Forum have a vivid presence in our daily lives – in the books we read, the shows we watch, the songs we sing, the movies we see, and the buildings we admire.

As we prepare for the fall edition focusing on conversation – the perils and promise of engaging with each other in discussion – we'd love your suggestions for items to include in "Forum 15." Is there a movie, book, painting, sculpture or piece of architecture that strikes you as a memorable exploration of conversation? Share your ideas in our members-only online community. A Lifetime of Learning; a Moment to Shine

Cecil "Ray" Penn has seen a lot in his 73 years, but few moments have surprised him as much as the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi. "I've only been speechless four times in my life," he recalls. "The honor just took my breath away. It was a soul-affirming kind of award."

Penn is a true life-long learner having earned seven degrees over the course of fifty years. His educational journey began at McKendree University where he turned 18 during his first week of school. As an English major, he earned his first degree there in 1970. His most recent degree – his second Ph.D. – was earned in 2020 from the Graduate Theological Foundation.

Penn shared his story with Phi Kappa Phi recently as he prepared to travel back to McKendree for the initiation ceremony where he was set to be inducted as an alumnus. He recalled his childhood as being one filled with the desire to learn. "I've been perpetually curious about things. No one in my immediate family had graduated from high school, much less college. But even though they did not have formal education, there were always books and magazines and newspapers," said Penn.

"My hometown was 500 people – not even a town, it was considered a village. The only thing we had other than some vacant lots to play baseball on was the library. That was the center of the community and of kids' lives," he said. "I was an only child, so my grandmother got me a set of World Book encyclopedias. When it was a rainy day, I would stand them up on edge and page through article by article."

His interests and schooling took him down two very similar career paths. Not only does he have 53 years of experience as an ordained Methodist minister, but he also spent 23 years in university teaching. "Those two careers have been intertwined throughout my life," said Penn. One of his doctoral degrees is in speech communication, so he's taught public speaking, news writing, communication and more. "Learning how to interpret a poem and learning how to interpret a piece of scripture are very, very similar. So in terms of communicating, I've been traveling down the same hallway – sometimes on one side of the hallway, sometimes on the other side – but always the same hallway."

Now retired, Penn continues to look for new opportunities to fill his time. "I've only got two talents – I can write and I can speak," he joked. He intends to put those talents to good use and is currently working on two books, one of which is his autobiography, tentatively titled Bless Oh Lord This Fool.

When asked what advice he might offer to his younger peers being initiated alongside him, he encouraged them to stop chasing happiness for themselves and instead find the joy in bringing happiness to others. He tried to give that advice in his years of teaching, as well. "I don’t teach just to the head but to the heart. This is sort of the recognition of my life's orientation, and I deeply appreciate this honor."
