ΦKΦ Member Spotlight

Yufei "David" Zhu's childhood took him across the world – from China to Canada and finally landing in the San Francisco Bay Area at age nine. He grew up in Fremont, California, before heading to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he earned a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering.

David is now continuing his studies as a full-time, second-year Ph.D. student at University of California Davis where he was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. During his spare time, David volunteers at a local food bank and organizes groups of fellow graduate students with the Biomedical Engineering Student Association Health.

David considers himself a scholar-athlete having grown up playing competitive tennis and joining the varsity team at Washington University. He still coaches tennis on the weekends and has added running to the mix having completed two marathons in his early twenties.

Let's get to know David!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
As an undergraduate student, I was just shy of the cutoff for joining a highly prestigious honor society like Phi Kappa Phi. To be invited as a graduate student makes me feel as though I have finally achieved what was once elusive.

Have you ever had a nickname? What is it?
My close friends call me DZhu. Pronounced “dee-zoo”.

What are your hobbies?
I try my best to run regularly, play tennis, and draw. I plan to take a painting class at some point in graduate school and hope to become an architect aficionado when I’m old and wise.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
Man at Work

What have you learned from the biggest struggle in your life?
I learned that life can be unpredictable and so it’s important to keep an open mind, try to stay optimistic, and steadily push toward a better future.

What celebrity would you like to meet?
Venus Williams

Who was your favorite teacher in school, and why?
I came to the United States and started learning English in third grade. I remember that year I scored in the tenth to twentieth percentile on the reading comprehension sections of the annual standardized exam. Despite that, my teacher, Mrs. Wright, was very supportive and told me that I was going to be “great one day”. I never forgot that.

What song would you say best sums you up?
Gymnopédie No. 1 by Erik Satie

What motivates you to work hard?
Envisioning the ideal life that I want to live.

What is your favorite thing about your career?
The purpose of biomedical engineering is to promote human health through technology. I think that’s a pretty cool cause to dedicate one’s career to.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Awards 2022 Fellowships

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society—today announced the recipients of its 2022 Fellowships. The fellowships, totaling $649,000, were awarded to 62 of the nation’s top scholars at institutions with an active chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.

Established in 1932, the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship has become the Society’s signature award, providing funding for the first year of graduate or professional study. This year’s program awarded two awards at $35,000 each, the 1897 Fellowship and the Sherrill Carlson Fellowship; six $20,000 Marcus L. Urann Fellowships, named for the Society’s founder; and 54 fellowships of $8,500 each.

We look forward to our fellowship program each year as it represents one of our signature efforts. Awards are what we do at Phi Kappa Phi. Our Fellows represent some of the most promising graduate students in the nation and we are pleased to recognize their academic excellence and proudly partner with our local chapters to support these emerging scholars as they continue their academic journeys,” said Society Executive Director and CEO, Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer.

The 2022 class of fellows represents students from more than 60 colleges and universities across the nation. The recipients—drawn from all academic disciplines—are pursuing post-baccalaureate programs of study ranging from science and engineering to arts and humanities.

The selection process for a fellowship is based on the applicant’s evidence of graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals, and acceptance in an approved graduate or professional program.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships are part of the Society’s robust portfolio of award and grant programs, which gives $1.3 million each year to outstanding members and students on chapter campuses through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

Up for Discussion: The Art of Speech

As we prepare the winter edition of the Phi Kappa Phi Forum, we're asking members to once again contribute their ideas to the theme. We enjoy reading your responses and choosing a sample to share in the print edition of the magazine.

For 2021, the first three editions of Forum centered on the themes of reading, writing and conversation. The winter edition will wrap up the series for the year with a focus on the great art of speech, and we welcome your feedback. Share your response to our question by replying to this discussion in our online member community Link.

What's the best speech you've ever heard, and why did it move you? Forum editor Danny Heitman says one of his favorites is a commencement address by then-First Lady Barbara Bush in which she urged graduates to live for something larger than themselves.

Responses of no more than three or four sentences are recommended, and we look forward to reading your contributions.

The community is available to active members only, and you will be required to log in with your Phi Kappa Phi credentials. For login assistance, email webmaster@phikappaphi.org.
