ΦΚΦ Member Spotlight – June 2020

Born and raised in Tunica, Mississippi, Arielle Hudson was initiated at the University of Mississippi in April 2019 while pursuing a bachelor's degree in Secondary English Education on scholarship from the UM chapter of the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program.

During her time on campus, Arielle served as the president of the university's Black Student Union and senator in the Associated Student Body Government. Through these roles, Arielle effectively lead change by co-authoring a resolution to remove a Confederate statue from the university's campus. She also tutors students through the Marks Education Project and was crowned the 2019 USA National Miss Hospitality State.

In November 2019, Arielle became the first African American female and 27th student to be selected as a University of Mississippi Rhodes Scholar. She will pursue a second bachelor’s degree in law at Pembroke College at the University of Oxford before returning home to the University of Mississippi where she plans to fulfill her five-year teaching requirement as part of her undergraduate scholarship obligation. Her long-term plan is to pursue a career in education policy and civil rights.

Let’s get to know Arielle!

  1. Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
Phi Kappa Phi is one of the oldest and most prestigious honor societies, and it offers a lot of professional and social development opportunities through its long history of scholars who are willing to serve as mentors to younger members.

  2. What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
Phi Kappa Phi means that my hard work and commitment to education and academic excellence has not been in vain.

  3. What cartoon character would you like to switch lives with?
I am named after Ariel in "The Little Mermaid," so it would definitely be her. She and I have a lot in common, although she is a fictional character—determination, passion, kindness, and fierceness.

  4. If you won the lottery, what's the first thing you would do?
I would invest in my hometown, specifically the schools and the living communities.

  5. What is your favorite childhood memory?
My family and I used to take a trip to Disney World every summer as I was growing up. Being in the van for 15 hours and listening to Phil Collins "Two Hearts" as soon as we hit the Florida state line has always been one of my fondest memories of childhood.

  6. If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
The first black female president being inaugurated.

  7. What was your favorite book as a child?
"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee has always been one of my favorite books. Mostly because as I get older and re-read it, I am able to dissect it from a different lens and with more perspective as I continue to grow and learn more about the world now and how it used to be.

  8. What is your greatest fear?
My greatest fears are not being able to truly help people when they need it and not being able to make the world a better place than it is now.

  9. When are you the happiest?
I am the happiest when I am among family and community. I am a very community-oriented person, and I enjoy being able to be emerged in my community environment and perform the work that needs to be done to keep the people in it uplifted and whole.

  10. What is the most important lesson you learned in the past year?
To listen. It is very easy to get caught up in making sure your voice is heard and that your concerns are received that we, as people, sometimes forget to take the time to listen to others' concerns and worries.

To learn more about Arielle, connect with her through the online member community here.

Is there someone you would like to see in the spotlight? If so, email Jamie Chapman, membership director, at jchapman@phikappaphi.org. Be sure to include basic information for the nomination.

Executive Director's Blog: Letter from Home

From the Executive Director
Forum, Summer 2020

As I write, it is late March, and we are in the early weeks of a new normal — learning to live a safe distance from one another in response to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States. I only hope, as you read this, that citizens' collective observance of the guidelines on social distancing has helped contain the deadly potential of the virus. What I don’t know at this point, what none of us knows, is how long this new normal will last.

There's real danger in turning a blind eye to alerts from the top level of public health officials. Such cautions need to be reinforced and restated repeatedly by officials of both public and private sector institutions in order for them to sink in. No one wants to interrupt plans for spring break travel, but that quickly became the reality when colleges and universities took instruction online in short order, banned gatherings on their campuses, and sent residential students home.

And still we saw photos of spring break revelers on beaches, though restaurants and bars were shuttered, and daily the numbers of cases rose. Here in Louisiana, February's Mardi Gras celebrations surfaced as a possible reason the number of cases in the state skyrocketed and the growth rate of cases per capita exceeded any other location anywhere. The Carnival festivities had unfolded before national health officials publicly raised alarms about the risks of large gatherings.

As I wrote in a letter to all members, staff has helped well over a hundred chapters cancel their spring initiation ceremonies as chapter leaders heeded the decisions of their institution's administration to refrain from gatherings. We are grateful that students continued to join Phi Kappa Phi in recognition of their academic achievements despite the disruption on their campuses.

The new normal we all observed this spring will almost inevitably lead to a very different normal when the threat of the virus abates. As of now, we have no idea what the next new normal will look like. What will be the long-term impact on colleges and universities who were already dealing with predictions of an enrollment cliff in the early 2020s? How will the rapid embrace of online learning adopted by higher education in order to teach out the spring semester impact the future of instruction?

The novel coronavirus has impacted American lives in every state, including members of my family, perhaps yours as well. I shudder to think of how the numbers will have grown by the time you read this.

Noted author C.S. Lewis suggested that “What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are.” With eyes wide open, America is facing the greatest public health crisis in its history. There's nothing normal about it. I pray you are well.

Need a Good Summer Read? We’ve Got You Covered

Summer is upon us and it’s time to sit back, relax, and find a good book to read. Whether you’re curled up on the couch or lounging by the pool – and whether you’re reading for school, work or pleasure – there’s nothing quite like sinking into a great, page-turner.

In this thread in Phi Kappa Phi’s exclusive community Link, members are sharing what’s got them hooked these days and what their plans are for the next item on their “To Be Read” list.

Michael Wilson (Texas Tech University) is working on research for a Texas history podcast. “My current readings are focused on that subject. The first is Spanish Texas 1915-1821 by Donald E. Chipman, and the second is Peace Came in the Form of a Woman: Indians and Spaniards in the Texas Borderlands by Juliana Barr,” he shared. “Actual history is so much more fascinating than dramatic licensed history.”

Richard Doubleday (Louisiana State University) has his reading plans lined up. “I am reading two books this summer. They are The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker and The Story of the Stone by Cao Xueqin,” said Doubleday. Becker’s book won a Pulitzer Prize, and “The Story of the Stone is one of the great novels of Chinese literature,” he noted.

Catherine Coates (Old Dominion University) shared her list, as well. “So far in 2020 I've finished reading The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden, The Wild Woman's Ways by Michaela Moehm, and Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett. I'm currently reading Small Gods by Terry Pratchett, Girl Talk by Jacqueline Mroz, and many journal articles about climate change, social media, and corporate social responsibility for a research project I'm working on.” She added, “Looking forward to reading everyone's recommendations!”

We want to see your recommendations, too! What do you have lined up for summer? Click here to join the conversation in Link.

Note, the community is available to active members only, and your member login will be required. For assistance with your login, email webmaster@phikappaphi.org.

Caldwell Celebrates Phi Kappa Phi Week
Chapter 335 at Caldwell University in Caldwell, New Jersey, set up a table in the student center from Feb. 3-7.

Members staffed the table each day during lunch and handed out chapter fact sheets and information about local and national awards. Approximately 100 students visited the table.

“We received many inquiries about grants and membership. It was a worthwhile week that promoted the Phi Kappa Phi chapter on our campus,” said Lynne Alleger, chapter president.

IUP Hosts GRE Strategy Session
Chapter 266 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania, hosted a strategy session for the Graduate Record Exam on Feb. 4.

Kaleigh Laird, student vice present, gave a presentation to help students prepare for the GRE. The chapter also served pizza to the students who attended the strategy session. The chapter plans to host another strategy session in the fall.

MSU Creates Good News Facebook Campaign
Chapter 302 at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, conducted a Facebook campaign to celebrate Phi Kappa Phi Week from Feb. 3-7.

To get the project started, the chapter sent an email to its members asking for “good news” items to share. Some examples of the good news they were looking for included receiving an award, having a journal article published and being promoted at work. Members also were encouraged to submit information through a Google form and provide a headshot photo.

Five members responded to the call and their achievements were showcased on the chapter’s Facebook page. The campaign was called The Phi Kappa Phi Good News Facebook Report. The announcements were also curated at the end of the week into a Wakelet post.

"We wanted to participate in Phi Kappa Phi Week in a way that would be meaningful, showcasing the scholarly activities and other good news of our members," said Dr. Melony Shemberger, Chapter 302 president. "We enjoyed recognizing member accomplishments through social media during this special week."

TAMUCC Hosts Multiple Activities
Chapter 328 at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, Texas, hosted a variety of activities to celebrate from Feb. 3-7.

The chapter held two receptions at the campus library and staffed an informational table in a central location on campus throughout the week. The table was staffed by officers and used as a way to meet potential new members. During these events, members distributed information on Phi Kappa Phi, gave out treats and held drawings for students. Over 60 students visited the table and put their name in the drawing.

“Phi Kappa Phi Week was an ideal time to educate our campus community about Phi Kappa Phi, bring our membership together to engage in different activities, and to share the many opportunities the Society has to offer. We had a great turn-out and a lot of fun!” said Karen McCaleb, chapter president.

YSU Staffs Information Table
Chapter 143 at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, hosted an informational table on Feb. 5.

Student Vice Presidents and student members staffed a table to promote the Society while wearing Phi Kappa Phi gear. They gave away apparel to current members and distributed applications for chapter awards, which are open to both members and non-members.

“We are fortunate to have highly engaged students as part of our chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. Those participating in Phi Kappa Phi Week enthusiastically invited others to apply for our chapter awards, adding an important personal touch to the application process,” said Mollie Hartup, chapter president.
