Chapter Update – January 2018

By Kay White
Chapter Development Director

Welcome to the newest incarnation of the Chapter Update! This feature will highlight chapters, officers, members, and activities in the hopes that this will inspire and encourage others. Also, since this will be updated monthly, there will be more of an up-to-date sense, rather than reading about it months afterwards in the quarterly Forum.

The fall semester ended with quite a number of initiations with many chapters opening their online enrollment early to beat the spring rush. If you are interested in doing the same, please contact Kam Lubben to help you get started.

Phi Kappa Phi's newest chapter, Nova Southeastern University, was installed on January 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They are chapter 345, and we wish them success in all endeavors.

The national office's chapter development department held two workshops in early January in Phoenix, Arizona, and Dallas, Texas. These Growing Your Chapter workshops were attended by chapter officers from all over the United States and a lot was shared regarding chapter visibility and event planning on campus, as well as leadership succession. One participant from Brigham Young University said of the event, “I got many good ideas that I hope to be able to parlay into not only a higher acceptance rate by those invited to join ΦΚΦ but into an even healthier chapter and more meaningful ΦΚΦ experience for those who do join.” Thank you to all of the chapter officers who were able to attend!

Lastly, this month we would like to highlight a chapter officer from San José State University who has received an award from a weekly jazz publication for his outstanding jazz programming skills. One would expect that he works in the school of music or drama, but this is only his hobby. Bradley Stone’s career is as a Professor of Chemistry within the department of science at San José State. Read more here.

If you have an activity from your chapter or a chapter member that you would like to highlight, please email Kay White. It would be great to feature that in this monthly column.

Nominations Being Accepted for Scholar, Artist, and Distinguished Service Awards

Phi Kappa Phi is currently seeking nominations for its Scholar, Artist, and Ray Sylvester Distinguished Service Awards. The deadline to submit a nomination is February 1, 2018.

Given once a biennium, the awards honor individuals who have demonstrated the ideals of the Society through their lifelong activities, achievements and scholarship. Each award highlights the academic and professional accomplishments of Phi Kappa Phi members who are renowned in their field.

First presented in 1974, the Scholar Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research and public service. In 1983, the Artist Award was established to recognize the achievements of those who, in addition to their outstanding scholarship, have displayed talents in the broad realm of the arts—creative, graphic, performing, visual, and fine arts.

Named in memory of Dr. H. Ray Sylvester, who at the time of his death served as president-elect, the Ray Sylvester Distinguished Service Award honors an individual who has provided sustained, non-compensated volunteer service to others beyond the realm of academia. The Distinguished Service Award was established in 2013.

Recipients of each award will receive a $1,000 honorarium, life membership and a recognition citation. The three honorees will be recognized at the Society’s 2018 Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 2-4.

The deadline to submit a nomination for each award is February 1, 2018. Self-nominations are accepted. To learn more about each program including nomination criteria and requirements or to view past recipients, click here. If you have additional questions, please contact Kelli Partin at kpartin@phikappaphi.org.

Share Your Stories of Mentorship Success

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” This quote from Phil Collins probably rings true for anyone who has ever served as a mentor.

Mentoring provides a shared opportunity for learning and growth. In fact, many mentors say they are grateful for the chance to mentor because the experience is more rewarding than they imagined. Are you a mentor? Tell us in the comments below about your experience. Your story may inspire others to get involved.

Maybe you were the one who benefited from having a great mentor. As part of National Mentoring Month, we will celebrate national Thank Your Mentor Day™ on January 25. On this day, we encourage you to thank those individuals who had a lasting impact on your life. Here are a few ideas:
  • Contact your mentor directly to express your appreciation.
  • Show your gratitude on social media.
  • Pass on the lessons you have learned by becoming a mentor to someone in your community.
  • Make a financial contribution to a local mentoring program in your mentor’s honor.
Learn how to become a mentor today.

And don’t forget to join the conversation with us on social media throughout the month by using #PKPMentors and #MentoringWorks.

Apply for a Phi Kappa Phi Award

Phi Kappa Phi is currently accepting applications for its 2018 award programs. The award programs provide funding for graduate study, continuing education, professional development, literacy initiatives and studies abroad.

Since 1933, Phi Kappa Phi’s award programs have recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. Currently, $1.4 million is awarded each biennium through programs that last year recognized over 350 individuals.

“The best part of Phi Kappa Phi to me, is how it continues its mission—for so many years—to recognize and award students in higher education for excellence in academic achievement,” said Audrey Alleyne, a 2017 award recipient. “This is such a great motivation for students who love learning to continue striving for greater achievements.”

Programs currently accepting applications include:
  • Study Abroad Grants: 50 grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to both members and non-members studying abroad. The deadline to apply is February 15.
  • Literacy Grants: Grants of up to $2,500 are available to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and individual members seeking funding for literacy initiatives. The deadline to apply is April 1.
  • Love of Learning Awards: One hundred awards, at $500 each, are available to help fund post-baccalaureate studies and professional development for active members. The deadline to apply is April 1.
  • Fellowships: Six fellowships of $15,000 each and 51 fellowships of $5,000 each are available to members entering their first year of graduate or professional study. The deadline to apply varies by each Phi Kappa Phi chapter. Contact your local chapter for deadline information.
  • Phi Kappa Phi Scholar & Artist: Once per biennium, Phi Kappa Phi honors two individuals who have demonstrated the ideals of the Society through their lifelong activities, achievements and scholarship. Nominations will be accepted until February 1.
  • Ray Sylvester Distinguished Service Award: Once per biennium, Phi Kappa Phi honors an individual who has provided sustained, non-compensated volunteer service to others beyond the realm of academia. Nominations will be accepted until February 1.

Phi Kappa Phi Installs Chapter 345 at Nova Southeastern University

Phi Kappa Phi will install its 345th chapter at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, today, January 9. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.

The installation of the Nova Southeastern University chapter comes after a thorough chartering process and approval from the Society’s board of directors. To be eligible, an institution must be a regionally accredited four-year college or university with an established reputation of excellence and an expressed commitment to upholding the values of the Society.

“The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to welcome Nova Southeastern University to its community of scholars,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “NSU’s core values—academic excellence, student centered, integrity, innovation, opportunity, scholarship/research, diversity and community—fit nicely with the Society’s mission of excellence and engagement.”

Officers elected by the chartering group to serve the newly installed chapter include President Dr. Maria Petrescu, President-elect Dr. Patricia C. Rose, Primary Contact Dr. Don Rosenblum, Secretary Dr. Sonia F. Kay, Treasurer Dr. Rachelle Dorne and Administrative Assistant Vanessa Mezquia.

Phi Kappa Phi Celebrates National Mentoring Month

As a Phi Kappa Phi member, you’ve made great achievements in your academic career. When you look back over your educational journey, who comes to mind? Was it a science or math teacher who encouraged you to work hard to master the course material? Was it a professor or faculty member who empowered you to pursue your dream? Most likely, you were lucky enough to have a mentor who inspired and challenged you to be where you are today.

January marks the 17th annual National Mentoring Month—a month dedicated to celebrating mentors, past and present, who have made an impact in the lives of others.

This impact is evident in research that shows when matched through a quality mentoring program, mentors can play a powerful role in providing students with the tools to stay focused and engaged in school. According to The National Mentoring Partnership, young adults who have mentors are 55 percent more likely to enroll in college.

Join us throughout January as we celebrate the benefits of mentoring as well as the mentors who make a difference in students’ lives each day.

To share your unique mentoring story, email news@phikappaphi.org, and join the conversation on social media by using #PKPMentors and #MentoringMonth.

Volunteer Spotlight – January 2018

Pankaj Jaiswal
Oregon State University

Chapter Position: President

University Position: Associate Professor, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology

Years of Service to the Chapter: 3

Degree(s)/Discipline: B.Sc., Botany and Chemistry; M.Sc., Biochemistry; Ph.D., Botany

How did you become involved as a chapter officer? I was invited by my chapter president to join the Chapter Executive Committee. Since I was an Emerging Scholar Awardee the prior year, it was an excellent way to introduce scholars and faculty who are interested in supporting the ΦΚΦ mission. During the first two years, I was a member of the committee as faculty vice president where I learned about the Phi Kappa Phi mission and chapter activities in addition to being part of them.

What has your chapter done that has made you proud? The chapter has always stood for bringing success and motivation to our student members and faculty. Our student vice presidents make extra efforts to organize events such as textbook drives, blood donations, and Phi Kappa Phi informational nights which take great efforts on motivating new members to join. I am also proud of our faculty vice presidents and scholars for mentoring and networking with the student members and their motivation to increase and support diversity. The chapter encourages members to come up with innovative ideas to help support student success. For example, starting in 2018, two new OSU-ΦΚΦ Impact awards will be awarded to two junior students who are Phi Kappa Phi members. The awardees will present their impact projects at the annual initiation banquet night.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you? Motivation and support for students to succeed and be recognized for their scholarly achievements. The same goes for faculty member scholars.

What do you enjoy most about being a chapter officer? Participating in ΦΚΦ activities brings me closer to students and faculty from diverse programs and provides me an opportunity to interact and learn new things from them.

What advice would you give to a new chapter officer? Be innovative in engaging student members in chapter activities and their success.

What are your hobbies? Photography and soccer.

Where are you from? India
