Member Mentions – July 2023

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi's international community is a unique blend of students, academicians, and corporate and civic leaders from all fields of endeavor. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and rewards academic success. That recognition doesn’t end after initiation. From their time in school to their professional career, Society members’ hard work continues to pay off and be acknowledged.

Phi Kappa Phi would like to congratulate these members on their recent achievements:

Caesaré German (SUNY Cortland) received a $2,500 scholarship from Alpha Sigma Lambda. The scholarship recognizes dedicated non-traditional students who are successfully continuing their college education.

William H. Mulligan, Jr. (Murray State University) was recently presented with the Levstik Award for Professional Service from the Kentucky Historical Society. The award is given to a person who has demonstrated exemplary work and dedication to their institution.

Alexandra Vishnevskaya (Angelo State University) was one of seven players from the ASU Belles tennis team to be designated as a 2023 NCAA Division II Women's Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, athletes must have at least a 3.5 GPA for the current academic year.

Phi Kappa Phi Adds its 357th Chapter at Logan University

As she pursued a doctorate in education at University of Missouri-St. Louis, Karen Dishauzi was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi through its campus chapter in 2009. “The opportunity to be invited to be a part of such a community of individuals was a great honor,” she recalled.

Now serving as associate dean of students for care, access, and community standards at Logan University, Dishauzi wanted a presence for Phi Kappa Phi at her present campus, too.

That dream came true this spring when the Society installed its 357th chapter at Logan, a university in Chesterfield, Missouri specializing in chiropractic education and health sciences. Dishauzi is serving as president of the new chapter, which was installed on May 19.

“I was overjoyed when I received the news from Dr. Bradley Newcomer, executive director and CEO, that The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi board of directors reviewed our application and approved a chapter at Logan University,” Dishauzi said. “Logan University has great tradition and values, and having a chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is a compliment to the university. The benefit of having a chapter at Logan University is the prestige and recognition that the honor society brings, the scholarly opportunities that are available, the networking and collaboration possibilities, great access to resources, and leadership development at the university and beyond.”

Newcomer is equally excited about the new chapter. “The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to welcome Logan University to its community of service-minded scholars,” he said. “Logan University’s commitment to excellence in health sciences, education, and service reflects its emphasis on training leaders dedicated to transforming health and wellness in the communities they serve.”

The installation of the Logan University chapter comes after a thorough petitioning process, site visit and approval from the Society’s board of directors. To be eligible, an institution must be a regionally accredited four-year college or university with an established reputation of excellence and an expressed commitment to upholding the values of the Society.

Other officers elected by the chartering group to serve the newly installed chapter include President-elect Dr. Patrick Montgomery, Treasurer Dr. Farzana Karim, Secretary Melanie Cassidy, Awards and Grants Officer Dr. Cheryl Burtle, and Public Relations Officer Dr. Sarah Luderer.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded when Marcus L. Urann had a desire to create a different kind of honor society—one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 325 select campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines and inducts approximately 25,000 new members each year. Membership is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students, along with faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

“I am excited about the opportunities that the chapter will bring to our high achievers in the Logan community,” Dishauzi said.

Member Spotlight – Renee Acosta

Born and raised in Northborough, Massachusetts, Renee Acosta currently resides in Charlotte, NC. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in disease and public health from Boston University in 2020. Earlier this year, she was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and recently graduated from the University’s School of Pharmacy with a master's degree in regulatory affairs.

Renee enjoys her role at Takeda Pharmaceutical as a lead investigator, where she works to investigate and establish innovative corrective and preventative actions. In addition to working in the pharmaceutical industry, Renee operates a small candle business, Vetiver and Co, and runs Love Renee Hannah, a lifestyle blog that cultivates inspiring content.

After her grandfather passed away from Alzheimer’s disease, Renee became passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission to find a cure. She participates in its annual Walk to End Alzheimer's as a team captain and donates a portion of Vetiver’s proceeds to the Association.

In her free time, Renee enjoys gardening, reading, writing, skydiving, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Let’s get to know Renee!

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
Community, achievement, acceptance. I enjoy being a part of a community of like-minded individuals where we can network, build relationships, learn, and grow. It's been so fun getting to know my peers from all over the country in the online community.

What is the last book you read?
Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda. It's a slow burn, but I'd rate it a solid 4/5. My favorite books to read are mysteries/thrillers and historical fiction. Next on my list are The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James, The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis, and A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw.

What do you grow in your garden?
Lots of things! We bought our first house in 2022, so I've enjoyed overhauling the landscape and planting jalapeño plants, mint, basil, lavender, parsley, and flowers of all kinds. I'm hoping to expand it in the fall.

What is the best gift you have been given?
The best gift I have ever received is a little music box from my husband for our fourth wedding anniversary. It plays “You Are My Sunshine”, a song we hum or sing to each other if the other is going through a hard time. I've received a lot of incredibly thoughtful gifts from family and friends, but that little music box is my favorite.

What intrigues you most about disease and public health?
I am fascinated with infectious diseases and understanding how those diseases and conditions affect public health worldwide. I love critical thinking/problem solving, and I am very interested in how we can improve the health of populations through preventative measures such as health information, immunization programs, and food, water, and environmental safety.

What do you enjoy most about skydiving?
The feelings and emotions associated with it. The adrenaline rush from diving out of a plane at 13,000 feet, the wind rushing at your face and through your hair, the feeling of free falling and the surge of serotonin. There's nothing quite like it in the world, and it's the most exciting thing I've ever done. I am hoping to get my certification soon to solo dive!

What is your favorite holiday?
Halloween is my favorite holiday, followed closely by Christmas and Thanksgiving. I love all things horror, and autumn is my favorite season. Halloween is the perfect mix of that autumn chill with a dash of spookiness. I love dressing up, curling up on the couch to watch horror movies, attending Halloween parties, bobbing for apples, and everything else that comes with it.

Do you have any pets?
I have three: a corgi named Teddy, a Domestic Shorthair cat named Delilah and a flame-point Siamese cat named Milo. It's a zoo over here, but they get along really well. I love how different their personalities are!

What motivates you to work hard?
Myself and my family. I hold myself to very high standards and have big goals and aspirations. The only way to achieve them is through good old-fashioned hard work! I also work hard for my family, because I want to give them the best future. I would love to be able to give back to my parents for all the sacrifices they've made for me throughout my life.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I would have to say graduating with both my undergraduate and graduate programs while working a full-time job, part-time job, running a small business, and making time for friends and family. It's been the most challenging yet rewarding chapter of my life so far, and I'm excited to see what's next!

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Awards 2023 Fellowships

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society—today announced the recipients of its 2023 Fellowships. The fellowships, totaling $649,000, were awarded to 62 of the nation’s top scholars at institutions with an active chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.

Established in 1932, the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship has become the Society’s signature award, providing funding for the first year of graduate or professional study. This year’s program awarded two awards at $35,000 each, the 1897 Fellowship and the Sherrill Carlson Fellowship; six $20,000 Marcus L. Urann Fellowships, named for the Society’s founder; and 54 fellowships of $8,500 each.

“At Phi Kappa Phi, awards are what we do and our Fellows comprise a selection of the nation's most talented graduate students. We take pride in acknowledging their exceptional academic achievements and are delighted to collaborate with our local chapters in fostering these promising scholars as they progress in their academic pursuits,” said Society Executive Director and CEO, Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer.

The 2023 class of fellows represents students from more than 60 colleges and universities across the nation. The recipients—drawn from all academic disciplines—are pursuing post-baccalaureate programs of study ranging from science and engineering to arts and humanities.

The selection process for a fellowship is based on the applicant’s evidence of graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals, and acceptance in an approved graduate or professional program.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships are part of the Society’s robust portfolio of award and grant programs, which gives $1.3 million each year to outstanding members and students on chapter campuses through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

Blazing New Trails: Phi Kappa Phi's New Benefactor Program

As a Life Member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gagan Chopra has embraced the Society’s motto, “Let the love of learning rule humanity.”

It’s an ideal that drew him to join Phi Kappa Phi at Iowa State University in 1991, and it’s guided his work as a successful technology executive. When Chopra learned of a new opportunity to support the Society as a Benefactor, he didn’t hesitate to answer the call.

Chopra is among dozens of Phi Kappa Phi members who have become Benefactors. The campaign, still in its early stages, is poised to attract much wider support.

Dr. Candice Castro, like Chopra, has been a Life Member of Phi Kappa Phi, and she quickly agreed to become a Benefactor after the new program was announced. Castro, now retired after serving as a U.S. Army surgeon and instructor of physician assistants, said she’s frequently asked to support various causes. For Castro, who was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at University of Texas at San Antonio, helping Phi Kappa Phi seemed natural. “Why not include an organization with this philosophy?” she asked.

The new Benefactor tier for Society members enables them to deepen their engagement with the Society beyond its Life Member designation. Through the Benefactor program unveiled earlier this year, Phi Kappa Phi leaders are seeking to increase investment in the Society’s traditional pillars of scholarship and service. They’re also aiming to strengthen support for campus chapters, which are the Society’s lifeblood, and committing to new initiatives to expand outreach and awareness of Phi Kappa Phi’s mission. Additionally, Benefactors are helping to provide critical resources for a new strategic plan for the Society.

“By recognizing talent in individuals at early stages of their lives, Phi Kappa Phi ignites a sense of faith in one’s own self, which brings confidence and impetus to pursue learning and doing,” said Chopra, a program manager with Bing team at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. “And collectively, this pushes our global society forward. As a Phi Kappa Phi Benefactor, we have an opportunity to magnify its essential role.”

Castro’s work as a military surgeon, instructor, and volunteer exemplifies the “learning and doing” that Chopra stressed as the heart of Phi Kappa Phi’s mission. In retirement, she went back to school and obtained a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language. “I have been volunteering for Catholic Charities since 2018, teaching English to refugees,” Castro said. “They are currently from the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. I find the teaching to be personally rewarding. Having deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, I was interested in the languages of Pashto and Arabic.”

In 2022, Phi Kappa Phi marked the 125th anniversary of its founding. Since its creation at the University of Maine in 1897, the Society has grown to include more than 320 chapters at campuses in the United States and abroad. Each year, the Society awards more than $1.3 million in awards and benefits to deserving scholars. Phi Kappa Phi boasts about 100,000 members around the world, a powerful bank of intellectual capital to globally advance innovation and service.

The recent observance of a landmark birthday for Phi Kappa Phi deepened reflection among its leadership team about how the Society can live and grow in the next 125 years and beyond. The Benefactor program is a key part of sustaining and strengthening Phi Kappa Phi for future generations.

“Phi Kappa Phi has thrived for more than 125 years because of the generosity of its donors,” said Bradley Newcomer, the Society’s executive director and CEO. “I’m deeply grateful to those who have already agreed to help the Society expand its reach as part of our recently launched Benefactor program. I know that many others will seize the opportunity to embrace this new form of engagement with Phi Kappa Phi.”

The Benefactor Program complements other recent efforts to raise awareness of giving opportunities within Phi Kappa Phi and educate members about how the Society’s mission is empowering the best and the brightest to build the 21st century.

In its spring 2023 issue, the Society’s Forum magazine launched a “Facing Forward” series of public service advertising that highlights Phi Kappa Phi members who are doing good in the world. The inaugural ad featured Aaron McFarlane, who received a Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award that helped support his research to fight multiple sclerosis. McFarlane, initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at Florida Atlantic University, is now a student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Because of their special role in advancing Phi Kappa Phi’s mission, Benefactors will be listed and recognized in upcoming issues of Forum, in other Society publications and social media platforms, and at special events.

For more information about the Benefactor program, members can visit PhiKappaPhi.org/Benefactor.

“I’d also like to thank our National Board of Directors for advancing this new initiative,” Newcomer said. “The support of our Benefactors will help Phi Kappa Phi increase the help it extends to ambitious scholars, strengthen its campus chapters, expand its outreach to other stakeholders, and create a strategic plan to map the Society’s future. I can’t thank our Benefactors enough for blazing this new trail for Phi Kappa Phi.”

Extend the Conversation: What Are You Reading This Summer?

In our new summer issue of Forum, author Heather Cass White, who's written wisely and well and the art of reading, offers a few lively thoughts about her summer reading life and includes some book recommendations for vacation season. Among her picks: Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke's quirky fictional history of English magic; and Ducks, which White describes as Lucy Ellmann's "stream-of-consciousness doorstopper about a day in the life of an Ohio wife and mother." If you missed White's Forum essay, you can read it here.

Do you have a favorite summer read right now? If so, we'd love to hear about it. A great read for Forum editor Danny Heitman, is The Summer Book, Tove Jansson's 1972 novel about a little girl and her grandmother as they pass the season on a little island off the coast of Finland. The writing is deceptively simple and vivid, and Jansson's bite-size vignettes perfectly capture the episodic way we often experience summer.

We'd love to hear from you! Extend the conversation and share what you’re reading this summer. Maybe other members will enjoy those titles, too!

Please note, our online community is available to active members only, and you will be required to log in with your Phi Kappa Phi credentials. For login assistance, email webmaster@phikappaphi.org.
