Chapter Update - April 2018

By Kay White
Chapter Development Director

Chapter 282 at California State University, Stanislaus, in Turlock, California, recently coordinated a series of events that worked together to make a Phi Kappa Phi Week at their institution. Chapter officers provided a week of activities which will culminate with the chapter’s initiation on Friday, April 27.

Monday kicked off the week of afternoon events with a presentation of the documentary Exploring the Reformation and Revivals which focused on the Reformation and its effects on religious movements and German history. This educational film featured the work and research of Dr. Richard Weikart, a history professor at CSU Stanislaus.

This was followed by a Tuesday discussion session with director Dan Gately, assistant director Raquel Ruelas, and cast members from Stan State’s Theatre Under the Stars. The group will present Tartuffe in May and spoke with attendees about their plans to bring a 17th century French farce to life in modern day California.

Today’s presentation will include a lecture and discussion about the beauty of one of the most prevalent shapes in our daily life – the sphere. Appropriately, a similarly shaped food will be served immediately afterward.

Raksmey Roeum Castleman, an alumna of CSU Stanislaus, will share her personal story of immigration, education, career and beyond on April 26 with refreshments and discussion to follow.

Janice Herring, a past president of the chapter and current regional vice president of the western region, shared her thoughts on the planning of the week’s activities. “Since our chartering in 1999, we have endeavored to provide a week of multi-disciplinary presentations and events annually, which are open to the campus and surrounding community, all leading up to the initiation ceremony at week’s end. This year is no exception. In commemoration of our 20th annual initiation, we are launching a year of celebration under the theme, ‘Phi Kappa Phi 20 Years Forward’, in which we plan to highlight at least 20 different things that the chapter is doing to align with the Society motto, ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’ Ultimately, we strive to honor scholarly excellence in our students, faculty, staff, and administration, and promote lifelong learning.”

The planning and execution of this weeklong series of events is exactly what we hope chapters are able to do in order to serve the dual purposes of our both our motto and our mission.

To share your chapter’s events with the national office, contact Kay White, Chapter Development Director, at kwhite@phikappaphi.org.

Phi Kappa Phi Announces Study Abroad Grant Recipients

Phi Kappa Phi today announced the Session A recipients of a 2018 Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant. The $1,000 grants were awarded to 50 students across the nation.

Awarded twice a year, the grants are designed to support undergraduates, both members and nonmembers from campuses that have Phi Kappa Phi chapters, as they seek expanded knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.

“Studying abroad provides students with an important opportunity to experience learning in a culture other than their own,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “We are pleased to help open doors to expanded global knowledge and meaningful engagement with different cultures through our study abroad grants.”

The selection process for a study abroad grant is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, relation of travel to academic preparation and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and acceptance into a study abroad program.

Established in 2001, the Study Abroad Grant Program has awarded more than $800,000 to undergraduate students. The grants are part of the Society’s robust award programs, which give $1.4 million each biennium to outstanding students and members through graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

For the complete list of recipients from Session A of the program, click here. The application process for Session B will open July 1, 2018.

When a story is created, it will be posted to the Phi Kappa Phi Merit page and distributed to the member’s hometown newspaper(s). In addition, a customizable online Merit profile will be created for the member to easily share his or her achievement with family and friends on social media.

Each story will include a Phi Kappa Phi-branded badge representing a specific achievement. Consider it a virtual trophy! Members can enhance their online Merit profiles by adding a photo, other activities, achievements, work experience and affiliations. The Merit profile can provide a positive, professional online listing of accomplishments for members to share with prospective employers.

Member Spotlight – Carl Langley

An invitation to join The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is likely not a surprise for some students. After years of hard work and determination, the honor is exciting but not entirely unexpected. For Carl Langley (University of Nevada, Las Vegas), the real Phi Kappa Phi surprise was one a bit more personal – the realization that the Society’s founding father, Marcus Urann, was his great-great-great-uncle.

In 1897, the Society began under the leadership of Urann, a University of Maine student. Twelve decades later, Langley joined the Society at UNLV after ten years in the Air Force.

As a non-traditional student, Langley found the return to school to be a meaningful one. “UNLV gave me something great to do when I transitioned out of the military. Research, great conversations, and invaluable mentorship made my undergraduate career more meaningful than it ever could have been before now,” he shared.

A recent interest in genealogy prompted him to begin research about a family member from the 1800s he’d heard had “something to do with the history of Ocean Spray.” While Urann was indeed the founder of Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc., the more profound discovery for Langley was the part Urann played in the founding of Phi Kappa Phi.

“Phi Kappa Phi membership is very highly regarded throughout academia. To know that my great-great-great-uncle's legacy continues to inspire generation after generation of learners to strive for academic excellence is probably the coolest thing ever. I want my kids, and my sister's and cousins' kids, to be as proud of their heritage as I am, and be inspired by (his) ideals.” He adds that his “goal is to pay tribute to him by showing the rest of (the) family just how impactful his contributions were.”

Langley also hopes to inspire other Society members to use their skills to help those around them. “No matter your involvement with Phi Kappa Phi, your selection should hopefully ignite some sense of internal civic duty. You likely know how to look at something and figure out how to make it better. You have a responsibility to do some good in the world.”

In keeping with the Society’s goal of fostering lifelong learning, Langley will be graduating from UNLV in May and starting his graduate studies at McKendree University a few weeks later.

On the importance of being a lifelong learner, Langley shares his uncle’s beliefs. “To love learning is to love life. Life will always surprise you with teachable moments. … Lifelong learning is about more than books and screens. Your experiences create a framework for more learning. If you get tired of what you’re doing, get outside and share some experiences. You’ll be better for it.”

Phi Kappa Phi Celebrates National Volunteer Week

This week marks the 44th National Volunteer Week—a week aimed at inspiring and recognizing volunteers who work together to accomplish a multitude of goals. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week was created as a way to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their communities.

In honor of this week, Phi Kappa Phi celebrates the outstanding efforts of board members, committee members and chapter officers that serve more than 300 chapters nationwide. Because of the incredible commitment and support of these volunteers, we are able to continue our mission of recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education.

Do you know of a Phi Kappa Phi chapter officer or member who has gone above and beyond their duties? If so, we’d like to know! Send us your inspiring stories or post below about a Phi Kappa Phi volunteer who has made an impact in your life.

We also want to know what volunteer service projects you are participating in this week. Tell us or show us on social media using #PKPVolunteers!

Apply to Serve on Phi Kappa Phi’s Council of Students

Phi Kappa Phi is currently accepting applications for its 2018-2020 Council of Students. The Council, comprised of student vice presidents from chapters across the nation, serves as the student engagement committee for the Society.

Established in 2007, the Council is tasked with enhancing communication with student vice presidents, planning and hosting a student leadership conference, and interacting with student vice presidents in the Society’s five divisions, among other tasks.

The Council of Students, per the Society Bylaws, consists of no fewer than five members, representative of the student membership as a whole. These students will gain valuable leadership skills and will communicate regularly with staff at the national office and the two student representatives who serve on the Board of Directors.

“Being part of the Council made me feel an important part of my chapter. I made sure to help others feel important and essential as well,” said Ana Lu Ramirez, a 2016-2018 Council of Students member. “I mobilized my chapter and we accomplished events and chapter growth. We hosted a book drive and a member drive. It was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to all the students.”

The Council will meet for the first time at the 2018 Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 1-4, with all expenses covered by Phi Kappa Phi. The Council will also be expected to attend and take a leadership role in the Student Leadership Summit held in July 2019 at a location to be determined. The opportunity to serve on the Council requires a commitment to serve through the 2020 biennium, when the Society selects its next Council of Students.

“The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has given me numerous opportunities to expand my horizons outside the academic setting and get engaged in the community services,” said Amreen Mughal, a 2016-2018 Council of Students member. “Council of Students is a platform for me to connect with hundreds of other chapters to learn and effectively share new ideas to fulfill the motto of the Society, ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’ ”

Interested in applying? Download the Council of Students application for full eligibility requirements and submission instructions. All applications must be submitted via email to kwhite@phikappaphi.org by May 25, 2018.
