Danielle Honeycutt was born in Louisiana and spent the majority of her childhood there, but her journey has taken her through Texas, Colorado and New York as well. After earning a bachelor's degree in business marketing, she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. More recently, she earned a master's degree in French linguistics and is now pursuing a Ph.D. in historical and cultural textiles and dress at Louisiana State University where she was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi last year.

During her undergraduate studies she minored in French and participated in two study abroad exchanges to Barcelonette and Le Puy en Velay in France. Upon completion of an accelerated merchandising program at FIT, she was recruited by Neiman Marcus and relocated to Dallas, Texas to train in their Executive Leadership Program. She returned to Louisiana in 2009 and was chosen by Rotary International to represent the state in Lyon, France during a one-month professional exchange program.

Danielle met her husband Corey on a trip to France and they have two children, Evangeline and Jules, who attend a French immersion elementary school.

Let's get to know Danielle!

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
A space for students and professionals to celebrate their hard-earned academic achievements. A platform to connect with scholars around the country. I saw joining Phi Kappa Phi as a way to renew my commitment to giving back to my community and becoming more involved in important service projects.

What is something that makes you feel like a kid again?
Road Trips - the excitement of impending adventure, car windows down taking in the changing landscapes, the smell of a foreign place, the memories made.

What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?
Your word is your bond. Keep your commitments. Showing up is half the battle.

What’s your favorite sports team?
Are fashion shows considered a sport? I don't follow sports closely but the two I enjoy watching in-person are LSU Women's Gymnastics and LSU Women's Basketball.

How do you stay motivated?
By reminding myself that the journey is just as important as the final goal. Taking it one step at a time and seeking the lesson in each day, not fixating on the future.

What is your favorite meal to cook?
My husband and I both share cooking duties. With young children, healthy eating is important to us. He brings a delicious Creole flair to our kitchen. I would put his gumbo up against the best New Orleans' chefs. My cooking is more Southern comfort food, traditional dishes that I grew up seeing my grandparents prepare, chicken and rice, potatoes, and greens.

What advice would you give your past self?
The moments matter. Don't squander them. Say yes more than you say no. Do one thing each day that brings you joy.

Who was your role model growing up?
My grandmother, Rebecca, who at 79 years young has yet to pause her pursuit of learning, was an invaluable inspiration. After raising children, she fulfilled her dream of attending college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree alongside her daughter, my aunt, eventually obtaining her Master’s + 30. Anytime I needed a reminder that age does not define a woman’s ability to learn or accomplish, she was always there. She was the trailblazer, I just follow with pride the path that was already laid for me, the one that she forged.

If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
Bob Marley. The one person who I feel was able to convey the most important universal truth (love) through one of the most meaningful mediums (music).

What do you enjoy most about the world of fashion?
Fashion sometimes gets labeled as a "shallow" or "trivial" academic pursuit. Yet we cloth our bodies every single day, making conscious (or sometimes subconscious) choices about how we will present ourselves to the world. I remember how validated I felt when I first read that scholars have found, throughout every culture, decorating the body is an essential human practice (Tortola & Marcketti, 2021). This has been seen among every civilization, past and present. Exploring the social and psychological aspects of dress is my passion. I enjoy the evolutionary nature of dress practices and how they can be such a powerful form of self-expression.

From the Executive Director: Members are Phi Kappa Phi’s Biggest Strength

In this issue of Forum magazine, we focus on the topic of writing — the joys and complications of putting words on paper. As I write this column, I am reminded of the work and deep thought that must go into our writing projects. Big or small, each project requires thought and commitment from the writer.

The writing process can also bring joy to both the writer and reader. I am thankful for the work and deep thought that our contributors have put into their articles for us in every issue. I hope you enjoy the articles that this issue’s writers have so thoughtfully produced. Just maybe, you will experience a little joy from their efforts!

As I write this column, I am also taking a moment to reflect on the past year and how we continue to adapt to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. I was reminded recently that our current pandemic is the second one that Phi Kappa Phi has endured in our 125-year history, the first being the flu pandemic of 1918. This poignant fact is a powerful testament to how resilient our Society and nation continue to be.

These reflections also reminded me that the strength of our Society has, and will continue to be, our members. There was no more powerful reminder of this than when we gathered this past March in our national office’s garden to plant a tree in honor of those members we lost during the pandemic. I am thankful to be serving with such a caring board leadership and national office staff as we head into an exciting future for the Society.

In closing, I hope that all of our members across the world have a safe and restful summer. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at bnewcomer@phikappaphi.org.

Could You Be The Next Love of Learning Award Recipient?

Phi Kappa Phi’s Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members, including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

For members like Lindsay Viatori, an Associate Professor of Dance at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, the award can help them reach new heights in their career. As a 2021 Love of Learning recipient, Viatori used the funds to travel and present her research at the Dance Studies Association Conference titled “Galvanizing Dance Studies: Building Anti-Racist Praxis Transformative Connections, and Movement(s) of Radical Care.”

“Presenting my research at this conference not only allows me to share with other dance professionals, but it also allows me to network and learn from many dance scholars who have paved the way for dance studies thus far,” Viatori says. “As dance scholarships shift, I hope to be at the fore of dance studies while simultaneously maintaining a high level performance and teaching career.”

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards of $500 each annually in support of members. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals and a personal statement.

Viatori was initiated in 2018 at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. “It is so exciting to be recognized for continued scholarly achievement. Being recognized from a large pool of impressive applicants from across the country is helping to demonstrate my continued work in dance studies,” said Viatori. “I am honored to have received such acknowledgment. The best part of Phi Kappa Phi is its support for continued learning.”

The deadline to apply for a Love of Learning Award is June 30. To learn more about the award and see full eligibility requirements, click here.

Forum Features: Writing

The latest edition of the Phi Kappa Phi Forum will be arriving in your mailbox soon. The summer edition's theme of "Writing" continues our 2022 series, which began with reading and will continue later this year with conversation and art of the great speech. The feature stories, regular columnists, and even our custom crossword puzzles will all dive deeper into those ideas.

The feature articles for the summer issue discuss:
  • Meeting History Departing Phi Kappa Phi board member Missy Hopper helped steer the Society through uncharted waters of COVID-19.
  • Freedom Writer Azar Nafisi thinks writers and readers are “joined at the hip,” since “the freedom of one guarantees that of the other.”
  • Coming Full Circle Through writing marathons, a father and son sprint through prose.
  • Pandemic Memorial Phi Kappa Phi leaders, staff plant a tree to honor members lost to COVID-19.
  • Writing Through Crisis In a troubled world, James H. Hibbard wonders whether writing can help us transcend pain.
As always, we welcome letters to the editor, member news, poetry submissions and story ideas for upcoming themes. Visit our Forum page to learn more.
