Phi Kappa Phi Announces Study Abroad Grant Recipients

Phi Kappa Phi today announced the recipients of a 2019 Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant. The $1,000 grants were awarded to 75 students across the nation.
The grants are designed to support undergraduates, both members and nonmembers from campuses that have Phi Kappa Phi chapters, as they seek expanded knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.
“Studying abroad provides students with an important opportunity to experience learning in a culture other than their own,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “We are pleased to help open doors to expanded global knowledge and meaningful engagement with different cultures through our study abroad grants.”
The selection process for a study abroad grant is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, relation of travel to academic preparation and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and acceptance into a study abroad program.
Established in 2001, the Study Abroad Grant Program has awarded more than $800,000 to undergraduate students. The grants are part of the Society’s robust portfolio of award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to outstanding students and members through graduate and dissertation fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.
For the complete list of recipients, click here. The application process for 2020 will open on December 15, 2019.

The event will bring together student vice presidents from Phi Kappa Phi chapters across the country to engage in activities aimed at bolstering leadership development skills. Participants will also have the opportunity to network with other student vice presidents and learn strategies for enhancing Phi Kappa Phi chapters.

“Being able to network with other student vice presidents from across the country and understanding that we are all going through common things within our chapter was valuable,” said Charlene Gallagher, a previous attendee. “I really feel like the seminars made a huge impact on the way that I view and understand leadership.”

Nominations will be limited to one student vice president per Phi Kappa Phi chapter.

To be eligible to attend, students must be an active member of Phi Kappa Phi and currently serve as a student vice president within their chapter. Members must also be returning to campus as a full-time student for the full 2019-2020 academic year.

Chapter Update - May 2019

By Kay White
Chapter Development Director

Book Drive

Chapters recently wrapped up successful Book Drives on April 30. A few of these chapters utilized creative ideas to collect as many books as possible for their deserving recipient organizations.

Chapter 157 at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, had a fun and eye-catching theme for their book drive—"Monstrous Spring." They created monster-themed book collection boxes to put around campus and surrounding areas. Part of their strategy was to create a social media buzz around the boxes by asking donors to take “Monster Selfies” while they donated and share by using the hashtag #NSUBookDrive. They also set up a Facebook page and website to garner interest in their project.

After their book drive was completed, the local library to which they had donated the books asked if they could use the colorful collection boxes for their summer reading program!

We appreciate all of the thought and creative energy that went into planning such a successful Book Drive.

Student Vice President Leadership Summit

The deadline for the Student Vice President Leadership Summit to be held this summer in Charlotte, North Carolina, is fast approaching! Be sure to have your application in by May 15.

To be considered for the summit, applicants must be:
  • A current Phi Kappa Phi student vice president (listed on the current chapter officer list for your chapter)
  • An active member of the Society (dues paid)
  • Returning to campus as a full-time student for the 2019-2020 academic year
  • Nominated by your local chapter

Each chapter will be responsible for covering a $250 non-refundable registration fee to send a student vice president to the summit. Travel, meals during the summit, and double-occupancy accommodations will be arranged by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

To apply for the Student Vice President Leadership Summit, applicants must submit:
  • A completed application and one-page résumé with current contact information
  • A letter of recommendation from someone who can describe his/her leadership skills

What we need from your chapter:
  • A completed chapter registration form and $250 non-refundable fee payment

Fond Farewell

This will be my last chapter update as I will be leaving Phi Kappa Phi on May 15. I will be focusing on my work with music, both in the community and with my private voice/piano studio. Thank you for all of the wonderful stories that you have shared with us at the national office. I was happy to share them through these updates!

Please share your chapter news and events with Michelle Lowery, our new Chapter Development Director. She can be reached at mlowery@phikappaphi.org or 800.804.9880, ext. 212.

For the Love of Literacy

Between February and April this spring, Phi Kappa Phi held its sixth annual Book Drive Competition. As part of the contest, 18 chapters across the country hosted drives to collect as many books as possible for an organization of their choice.

The book drives were held at both colleges and universities nationwide. Beneficiary organizations chosen by the chapters ranged from schools and libraries to other community organizations such as tutoring and mentoring programs, correctional centers and more. In all, the participating chapters collected more than 10,000 books and $461 in monetary donations.

The winning chapters whose drives collected the most donations were:
  • Western Illinois University
  • Texas A&M University - Kingsville

“I am extremely proud of our two student vice presidents, Carina Villarreal and Kayla Canales, for organizing our first-ever Spring Book Drive,” said Chapter President Dr. Susan Roberson. “I would also like to mention the generosity of the students and faculty of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, who dug into their pockets to pull out a dollar, some change, whatever they had. The fact that we were able to raise so much money to provide books and literacy materials for the Kingsville Housing Authority Youth Center speaks volumes about the caring nature of our university community.”

The winning chapters will be eligible to receive either a “Little Free Library” to be placed at a location of their choice or a waived registration fee to attend the upcoming Student Leadership Summit in summer 2019. The Little Free Library is a freestanding box where anyone can donate and borrow books in an effort to promote literacy throughout communities—a prize that fits well with the Society’s love of learning and literacy.

Other Phi Kappa Phi chapters that hosted a book drive as part of the competition include Arkansas State University; Bloomsburg University; Caldwell University; California State University, Sacramento; Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; Florida Institute of Technology; Georgia Southern University; Ithaca College; Louisiana State University; Methodist University; Nicholls State University; Texas A&M University – Commerce; Texas Woman's University; University of North Carolina at Charlotte; University of Maryland University College; and University of South Alabama.

Since its creation in 2014, Phi Kappa Phi’s annual book drive competition has donated more than 55,000 books to organizations both locally and abroad.

Support Phi Kappa Phi with Smilematic

In 2015, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi joined AmazonSmile giving members, friends and family a new way to support the Society. AmazonSmile offers the same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon, with the added bonus that Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price to Phi Kappa Phi. It’s a simple and convenient way to support the Society every time you shop Amazon!

Smilematic is a web browser extension that was developed to help shoppers who forget to enter the AmazonSmile website when they go shopping. It can be installed for free to Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and will automatically route all Amazon shopping experiences through AmazonSmile. Smilematic is also working to launch a mobile version soon.

The Smilematic extension does not collect any personally identifiable information, so you can use it with confidence. You can click here to review the Smilematic Privacy Policy for more information.

We invite you to click here to add the extension to your browser, and share our customized link [https://couponfollow.com/smilematic#95-1856406] with your family and friends.
