Phi Kappa Phi Announces Love of Learning Award Recipients

Phi Kappa Phi recently announced the Session B recipients of a 2017 Love of Learning Award. The $500 awards were given to 100 Phi Kappa Phi members across the nation.

Click here to see the complete list of recipients from Session B of the program.

Awarded twice a year, Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

“What all Phi Kappa Phi members have in common is a love of learning, so it’s fitting that the Society should enable learning in a variety of venues,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “The Love of Learning Award does just that by supporting members at all stages of their professional careers.”

The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals, and a personal statement.

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards annually in support of post-baccalaureate professional development. In addition, the Society awards $1.4 million each biennium to qualifying students and members through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

The application process for Session A will open December 15, 2017. Learn more here.

Volunteer Spotlight – December 2017

John Jones
Jacksonville State University

Chapter Position: President

University Position: Professor of English

Years of Service to the Chapter: 15

Degree(s)/Discipline:
B.A., M.A., Ph.D. in English Language and Literature

How did you become involved with Phi Kappa Phi? I volunteered for the chapter installation committee in the fall of 2000. When our work was completed, my colleagues on the committee nominated me to be the chapter's first president.

What has Phi Kappa Phi done that has made you proud? Our 2011 induction ceremony was to be held on April 27, but was canceled because of devastating tornadoes that ripped through Alabama, destroying several communities in the vicinity of the university. Rather than reschedule the ceremony, the chapter voted to donate the money reserved for the ceremony and reception to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
Phi Kappa Phi is an organization of which we all can be proud. All too often, organizations today lose sight of their missions and goals and let their focus waver from serving the people they were intended to serve. Phi Kappa Phi has always kept its focus on rewarding academic achievement and helping its members be more effective in serving their communities.

What do you enjoy most about being a chapter officer? The best part of being an officer is welcoming students to Phi Kappa Phi at our induction ceremony. Being able to reward their achievements is the most gratifying part of my job.

What advice would you give to a new chapter officer? Whenever your chapter runs into difficulty, contact your chapter development officer. They've seen it all and can and will offer valuable assistance no matter what the situation.

What are your hobbies?
Reading, cooking, fishing, golf, gardening and general puttering around the house and in the garage.

Where are you from? Rutherford, New Jersey
