Member Spotlight – Katilyn Gerstner

Katilyn Gerstner is a biologist and social scientist fascinated by health, nutrition, and why humans are the way they are. She studies wild chimpanzee gut microbiomes and is most passionate about protecting primates.

Katie earned a bachelor's degree in biology and public outreach at Illinois State University and a master's in anthropology from Wayne State University. She is a Ph.D. candidate in applied anthropology and a Doctoral Teacher’s Assistant at Texas State University, where she was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi in 2022. Katie is a John

Michael Kilby Fellow in the Department of Anthropology and a former Doctoral Merit Fellow for The Graduate College.

In her role at Texas State University, Katie investigates ecological and anthropogenic factors that impact wild chimpanzee health and welfare in Senegal, West Africa and examines similarities of microbes being transferred between people and apes.

Katie has been a member of the American Society for Primatologists since 2017. She currently serves as the Media and Engagement Committee Chair, which allows her to share her enthusiasm for primatological research with the public, promote appropriate care for captive primates, and increase diversity in the field by sharing the voices of underrepresented researchers and those living in primate habitat host countries. She also serves on the ASP’s Conservation Committee, where she assists with hosting webinars, fundraising, and grant reviewing.

Let’s get to know Katie!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
I accepted the invitation to join because Phi Kappa Phi funds research support, and they are a community full of hard-working people who are tenacious, supportive and enthusiastic about professional development.

Where does your passion for primates come from?
My earliest memories with primates were during the field trips I would take to Lincoln Park Zoo in elementary school. I loved watching the gibbons swing across the outdoor enclosure.

What is your favorite movie?
Twister. It is a family favorite movie and may be why I wanted to become a scientist.

What do you enjoy most about traveling for work and research?
Seeing animals in their natural habitats is special, as is meeting the people working in animal conservation. I also like visiting new cities and experiencing new cultures.

What motivates you to work hard?
My family and the gratitude I have for having the opportunity to study wild chimpanzees for a living. It’s a lot of fun and has led to many opportunities and friendships.

What is your favorite thing about your hometown?
Summertime in Chicago is a vibe! The weather, food, going downtown, and family holidays this time of year make it my favorite time to visit home.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
My acceptance into a Ph.D. program. I am a first-generation college student.

What impact do you hope to have on the world with your work?
I hope my research applies to future conservation protocols for wild chimpanzees in Senegal. My results will also contribute to public health approaches dedicated to the coexistence between humans and wild animals that live amongst each other.

What is your favorite meal to cook?
I love sweet, spicy and saucy foods. My favorite meal to cook is chipotle honey chicken with mango avocado salsa – from Chrissy Tegan’s “Cravings” cookbook.

Do you have any pets?
I have a six-year-old brown labradoodle named Annie. She has a beard and expressive eyebrows, and she loves Greenies.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Announces Love of Learning Award Recipients

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines—today announced the recipients of a 2023 Love of Learning Award. The $1,000 awards were given to 200 Phi Kappa Phi members.

Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

“Congratulations to our Love of Learning Award recipients! Their unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge is an inspiration to us all and their dedication to lifelong learning is a testament to the values we hold dear at Phi Kappa Phi.” said the Society Executive Director and CEO, Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer.

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning program, which gives 200 awards annually, doubled its funding this year and saw a 50% increase in applicants. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals, and a personal statement.

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi’s award programs have recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. In addition to the Love of Learning Program, Phi Kappa Phi awards graduate and dissertation fellowships, study abroad grants, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. Each year $1.3 million is awarded through programs that recognize nearly 500 individuals annually.

For the complete list of recipients, visit www.PhiKappaPhi.org/LoL2023recipients. The application process for the 2024 Love of Learning Awards will open on Dec. 15, 2023.

Literacy Spotlight – Love of Literacy

Throughout September, Phi Kappa Phi has celebrated National Literacy Month by taking a closer look at initiatives supported by our Literacy Grants.

Phi Kappa Phi members are known for their love of learning, and for member George Hendricks, the Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant has helped keep the Society's motto alive through his Love of Literacy Project. The project is a collaborative endeavor in which representatives from Methodist University and Hay Street United Methodist Church provide weekly one-on-one social and academic mentoring to students at Margaret Willis Elementary, a low-income school in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Funds from the grant provided increased opportunities for sharing the love of learning by expanding literacy skills through reading and writing. This year, the project welcomed dynamic children’s book author Aniesha Jackson to the school to present her book “Queen Kia’s 8-Step Guide to Friendships” in an all-school assembly. In addition to meeting Jackson, 320 K-5 students were able to partake in publishing a student-created book with a social-emotional focus and expand their classroom and home library materials. “This project promotes Phi Kappa Phi’s motto of 'Let the love of learning rule humanity.' We hope to continue to spread truth, virtue, justice, and love to others in our world," Hendricks said. It is MU’s hope that the program’s success can be replicated at other elementary schools in Cumberland County, North Carolina, and beyond.

When asked what the best part of Phi Kappa Phi is, Hendricks naturally responded with “their mission of 'let the love of learning rule humanity.' It is exciting to see our students at Methodist University live this mission as we change the world through the love of learning!"

Applications for the 2024 Literacy Grants open on Dec. 15, 2023. To learn more about the Literacy Grants program or to sign up for a reminder when applications open, click here.

Literacy Spotlight - York Literacy Project

To kick off our monthlong celebration of Literacy Month, we're shining a spotlight on a 2022 Literacy Grant recipient—Allison Skiple and the York Literacy Project.

The York Literacy Project is a collaborative project between Elmhurst University’s Service Learning Program and The York Community Resource Center in Villa Park, Illinois. The YCRC of Outreach Community Ministries is a multi-purpose neighborhood community center that serves the residents of Villa Park offering after-school programs for elementary-aged students. Eighty-five percent of the after school students are bilingual and 93% are at or below 185% federal poverty level. The YCRC offers a space where students can go to after-school and where receive additional academic and social support.

During the 2022-2023 academic school year, 19 students from Elmhurst University dedicated their time to volunteer for the York Literacy Project. These Elmhurst University volunteers not only contributed to the YCRC but also enhanced their own academic and professional growth, specifically as students majoring in Spanish and Communication Sciences and Disorders.

“I am so grateful to have received this grant. It has been so rewarding to watch the children I serve blossom and grow as readers and writers,” Skiple said. “My mission is to inspire and develop the leaders of tomorrow by helping them build their confidence and understand all they can offer to the world; this grant allowed me to do so.”

Funds from the Literacy Grant provided the YCRC students with fresh reading materials, essential supplies, and assistance, promoting literacy development throughout the school year and even during the summer break. Additionally, when the York Literacy Project was not in operation, this grant played a pivotal role in nurturing the skills and leadership potential of future generations of readers.

Applications for the 2024 Literacy Grants open on Dec. 15, 2023. To learn more about the Literacy Grants program or to sign up for a reminder when applications open, click here.

Phi Kappa Phi Celebrates National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month, and Friday, Sept. 8 marks the celebration of International Literacy Day. The worldwide event's goal is to draw attention to the importance of literacy and build a more literate society.

As part of Phi Kappa Phi's ongoing support of education and lifelong learning, the Society will devote the entire month to literacy awareness. Want to join us in our month-long celebration? Here are some ways to get involved:

Host an Event
One of the best ways to promote literacy is to organize a local community event like an info booth, literacy forum, tutoring program, book drive, or monthly read-aloud. You can make it an annual tradition for your chapter with a Fall Service Project.

Get Connected
Throughout the month we will highlight various literacy projects from our Literacy Grant recipients on our blog and across our social media channels. We encourage you to connect with us on social media to share your literacy initiatives with us using #PKPLovesLiteracy.

Apply for a Literacy Grant
Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grants are available to help you champion new or ongoing literacy initiatives. The grants of up to $2,500 are available each year for chapters and individual members. Mark your calendars: the 2024 applications open on Dec. 15. Sign up here for a reminder.

Click here to learn about the projects the 2023 Literacy Grant recipients are supporting.

Give a gift
Clean off your bookshelf and donate books to a local library, school or organization in your community. You could also host an event to raise funds to make a monetary donation to a local organization that supports and promotes literacy in your community.

Join the conversation in our online community to tell us about literacy initiatives championed by you or your chapter.

We look forward to celebrating literacy and our love of learning all month long, and we hope you’ll join us!
