Phi Kappa Phi Members Reach Great Heights—In Space!

Phi Kappa Phi has a history of members reaching great heights. As the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing approaches, the Society is highlighting those who took the challenge literally and soared into space as NASA astronauts.

James Alton McDivitt, who was initiated at University of Michigan in 1959, was the first Society member to venture into space in 1965 when he was the command pilot for Gemini 4.

Today, Phi Kappa Phi member Christina Koch is aboard the International Space Station, and Space Shuttle crew member Wendy Lawrence is serving on the Phi Kappa Phi Foundation Board of Trustees.

Watch for the fall edition of the Forum magazine to read a profile of Anne McClain who recently returned to Earth from her time spent as part of Expedition 58 and 59 aboard the ISS.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Awards 2019 Fellowships

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society—today announced the recipients of its 2019 Fellowships. The fellowships, totaling $615,000, were awarded to 58 of the nation’s top scholars at institutions with an active chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.

Established in 1932, the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship has become the Society’s signature award, providing funding for the first-year of graduate or professional study. This year’s program awarded 50 fellowships of $8,500, six $20,000 Marcus L. Urann Fellowships, named for the Society’s founder, and two new awards at $35,000 each, the 1897 Fellowship and the Sherrill Carlson Fellowship.

“The Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship, the Society’s first and now signature award, provides financial support to superior students beginning their graduate education. Endorsed by their local Phi Kappa Phi chapters, fellows go on to study at some of the nation’s finest graduate programs,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “We are pleased to have offered this opportunity to emerging scholars for the past 87 years, and are especially delighted this year to significantly increase both the amount of the individual awards as well as the total amount awarded.”

The 2019 class of fellows represents students from 58 colleges and universities across the nation. The recipients—drawn from all academic disciplines—are pursuing post-baccalaureate programs of study ranging from science and engineering to arts and humanities.

The selection process for a fellowship is based on the applicant’s evidence of graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals, and acceptance in an approved graduate or professional program.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships are part of the Society’s robust award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to outstanding members and students on chapter campuses through study abroad grants, dissertation fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

To see the complete list of 2019 Phi Kappa Phi Fellows and learn more about the program, visit www.PhiKappaPhi.org/Fellowship.

The Literacy Grant Program, established in 2003, is part of the Society’s robust award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to outstanding students and members through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development and member and chapter awards. Drawing from a multidisciplinary society of students and scholars from large and small institutions, the grants help fund projects ranging from traditional reading initiatives to those fostering learning in cultural, digital, financial, health, historical literacy and beyond.

Phi Kappa Phi members’ love of learning is very evident in each.”

The winning literacy projects were selected for a grant based on a number of criteria including the project’s scope, student and community involvement, impact, duration and ability to achieve success.
