ΦKΦ Member Spotlight

Mosima Thema is a South African licensed attorney who grew up in Johannesburg. After earning a bachelor's degree in political science and psychology from Stellensbosch University and an LL.B. degree from the University of Pretoria, both in South Africa, she relocated to attend law school at the University of Southern California where she was initiated into the Society earlier this year.

In between work on her master's degree in alternative dispute resolution and an externship program at the Superior Court of Los Angeles, she volunteers as a teachers' assistant and enjoys long runs.

Let's get to know Mosima!

Why did you accept the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi?
I accepted the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi because it is an honor to have received recognition for my academic success. My membership is a badge of honor and confirmation that the years of hard work have indeed been worth it.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
Growing up, my mother would always say to my twin brother and me that life is about choices. At every moment of our lives, we have a choice. That has always been my approach to life — everything is a choice, even success. You make the choice to succeed, and that decision is followed by the action of hard work to bring it to fruition. Even when things get tough and challenging, you have a choice to give up or keep going.

Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?
I plan on traveling to Europe for the first time next year. I am particularly excited about visiting Italy and Greece.

What do you like to do to relieve stress?
I go for a run. Running has helped me to manage stress and insomnia over the years.

What is your favorite holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is June 16 which is Youth Day in South Africa. The day commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprisings in which Black students fought against the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools by the apartheid regime. The strength and willpower of those students and their fight for the greater good for future generations allowed me to become an educated Black woman. This day is also important to me because it is the day my father was born many moons prior.

What is special about the place you grew up?
My family. I was privileged to grow up with a loving and supportive family, invested in making sure I knew that I belonged.

How do you stay motivated?
Self-motivation is not always the easiest, especially when the going gets tough, but I stay motivated by reminding myself of why I started. The "why" is important and even more so on hard days when giving up seems like the easier option.

What’s your favorite food?
My grandmother's bean soup.

What’s your favorite family tradition?
Our family gatherings over the holiday season in December are always fun and a great way to wrap up the year.

Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
As the first attorney in my family, I did not have any Black female attorneys to provide mentorship or to draw inspiration from during my youth. My inspiration came from wanting to make a difference and having parents who supported me.

Forum Features: Family

The latest edition of the Phi Kappa Phi Forum will be arriving in your mailbox soon. The fall edition's theme of "Family" continues our 2021 series, which began with solitude and will continue later this year with community. The featured stories, regular columnists, and even our custom crossword puzzles will all dive deeper into those ideas.

The feature articles in the fall edition discuss:

Ready, Set, Write – In a social media age, it can seem that many of us are writing more than ever. A new Forum column explores how to do it well.

All in the Family – In a life filled with dogs, CBS journalist Martha Teichner finds a rich circle of support.

Anyone Human Must Wonder – Horace Kephart ended up getting a mountain named after him. His wife, writes author and family descendant Beth Kephart, is worth remembering, too.

Remembering Aunt Flora – For poet and memoirist Catharine Savage Brosman, memories of an indefatigable relative have shaped her for a lifetime.

Family Dilemma – Naturalist Rick Bass ponders the problem of exposing children to natural wonders that might vanish within the youngsters' lifetimes.

As always, we welcome letters to the editor, member news, poetry submissions and story ideas for upcoming themes. Visit our Forum page to learn more.

Career goals take effort, a plan to reach them

When most people are asked about their career plans, there is usually a pause rather than a solid answer, and unless you love planning, you could have a similar response. Let’s be honest career planning can sometimes seem unnecessary and a little boring until you are faced with a significant change such as a job loss or the persistent feeling that you could be doing something different.

Career goals do not usually fall in your lap. Instead, it takes effort and a plan to reach them. One of the mistakes people often make in their careers is overlooking the need to manage their next steps in the present and the future.

People usually fall into two career camps – those who think about having a plan and those who have one. When a sudden change in employment happens, you can tell which camp lands a job faster.

The truth is it does take effort to manage your career, especially when there is no pressure to do so. But the result of having a plan is priceless. Having a career direction to pursue gives you confidence if you are job searching or just wanting to advance career growth with your current employer.

Thinking about planning is a good start and usually filled the right intentions, yet without putting your plan into action, it stays in your head. Having good intentions cannot substitute for an actual plan, even though you might feel better.

Most people deal with a career crisis when they are faced with it rather than taking time to gather information when less pressured.

Why do people procrastinate on managing their careers?
Because it is easy to delay when there is no immediate gratification, and some take planning to the extremes. When planning becomes too structured, it can take the spontaneity out of those who are free spirits. For others, tunnel vision on job titles keeps them stuck without the flexibility of trying something new. They end up missing opportunities to build new skills along the way towards their career goals.

It’s you own your career. If you skip the effort in managing it, you could end up settling for a job instead of planning for a fulfilling career.

Here are some thoughts towards career planning:
  • Do not let fear rule your plans. It is never too late to dream, do not allow your age or fear to influence your desire to do something different.
  • You will change careers multiple times throughout your life. Planning gives you more control and a direction to follow regardless of changes.
  • The job market is unpredictable. Who would have guessed working from home last year? This year’s trends are different from the previous year. However, when you proactively plan to use your skills and present your value to others, it can give you an advantage because you know what you want.
  • Your career might give you complete satisfaction right now, but the key is not to become complacent. Creating a good plan keeps your networking connections alive, supports continuous learning, and keeps you moving forward, growing.
  • Having peace of mind when chaos occurs all around you is the byproduct of planning; even though things feel unpredictable during change when you have a career plan, it gives you a path to follow.
  • The most significant benefit of planning is that it helps you maintain your interests and serves as a reality checklist when new opportunities are presented. When you are in the driver’s seat of your career, it helps you make good decisions in accepting or declining job offers.
While planning may not seem like an enjoyable pastime, it helps you during the highs and lows of your career. Without a plan to follow, you are most likely to drift into job opportunities rather than make a choice based on your goals.

How has planning helped your growing career? What steps did you include in your plan? Click here to share with us today!

Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

“For nearly 125 years, the motto of Phi Kappa Phi has been its guide – let the love of learning rule humanity. We are pleased to support these members who embody the Society’s motto by funding their lifelong learning endeavors,” said Traci Navarre, the Society’s acting executive director.

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards annually in support of post-baccalaureate professional development. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals and a personal statement.

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi’s awards program has recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. In addition to the Love of Learning Program, Phi Kappa Phi awards graduate and dissertation fellowships, study abroad grants, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.
