The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi to Install Chapter 353 at Methodist College

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will install its 353rd chapter at Methodist College in Peoria, Illinois, today, March 29. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.

“The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to welcome Methodist College to its community of scholars,” said Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “The holistic and comprehensive academic experience Methodist offers its students is central to its commitment to educate quality and engaged health care professionals.”

The installation of the Methodist College chapter comes after a thorough petitioning process, site visit and approval from the Society’s board of directors. To be eligible, an institution must be a regionally accredited four-year college or university with an established reputation of excellence and an expressed commitment to upholding the values of the Society.

The officers at the newly installed chapter are President Charles Clark, President-elect Eileen Setti, Secretary Pam Ferguson, Treasurer Barry Soffietti, Public Relations Officer Debbie Stark, and Awards and Grants Coordinator Melissa Williams.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 when Marcus L. Urann, a student, brought to his professor the idea of creating a different kind of honor society—one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 select campuses in the United States and the Philippines and inducts approximately 30,000 new members each year. Membership is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students, along with faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Chapter Update - March 2019

Marshall University (Chapter 313) had their student vice presidents put together a wonderful newsletter to reach their campus community. The newsletter highlights their most recent initiation ceremony, award opportunities, and what Phi Kappa Phi is doing in the community. Click here to check it out.

The newsletter accompanied an email to chapter members that were set to renew with an explanation of what chapter dues (which are not mandatory) do for the chapter and community. It is a good example of what a chapter can do to be sure that the members that renew see what they are supporting, and it leads to more members renewing and continuing to support their chapter!

“When you receive your dues invoice from Phi Kappa Phi, in addition to paying national dues ($35), you have the option to add chapter dues ($15) and/or an additional donation to support Marshall’s chapter (313) scholarships,” Chapter President Dr. Kristen Lillvis explains in the accompanying email. “Phi Kappa Phi members’ national dues support many worthwhile projects at the national level (including national awards), but none of this money is returned to local chapters. However, all money you designate for the local chapter, i.e. additional money for chapter dues and scholarships, is returned to Marshall’s chapter and will help us to grow the support we can offer to our students and to the community. Additionally, contributions to our scholarship fund are tax deductible for charitable purposes.”

Something as simple as this can lead to gains in terms of how many people choose to support their chapter, just by understanding what this money goes towards, and how it benefits the chapter.

We thank Marshall for letting us share their information and email!

If you have chapter events and updates that you’d like to share with the national office, email me at kwhite@phikappaphi.org.

The Society gives nearly $1 million each year to outstanding students and members through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

Executive Director's Blog - Still Learning

From the Executive Director
Forum, Spring 2019

Learning is central to the Society’s mission and identity. “Let the love of learning rule” serves as the guiding principle that links the well over 1.5 million women and men who have accepted the invitation to join Phi Kappa Phi over the past 122 years. Love of learning is the common bond that extends over generational differences, ethnic differences, disciplinary differences, geographic differences and more.

When he was 87, the year before his death, Michelangelo reportedly wrote on the edge of a drawing the words "ancora imparo," translated as “I am still learning.” I’ve kept those words on my office wall in whatever venue I find myself. They serve as a reminder that we can learn from every experience.

And yet we know from polling that learning, particularly higher learning, is neither universally embraced nor valued by a significant portion of the American population. Last July, the Pew Research Center found a growing divide in American attitudes toward the effect of higher education on the country. What fuels this thinking?

Distinguished scholar and City University of New York professor Cathy N. Davidson, author of The New Education: How to Revolutionize the University to Prepare Students for a World in Flux (Basic Books, 2017), offered some thoughts in a recent op-ed in The Washington Post entitled “Four Common Lies About Higher Education.” It’s worth a read. Davidson soundly rejects the naysayer argument that college isn’t worth it by constructing a case for the redesign of higher education to empower students for a world far more complex than that of their parents and grandparents. At the same time, she confronts the economic realities of undervalued and undercompensated professions like teaching, social work and health care as well as the massive debt graduates carry as they leave campus.

Those of us who have worked in higher education know this to be true. So what does this have to do with intelligence? Honor societies are frequently accused of being elitist by our very nature, that we admit to membership only those at the top of the class, a/k/a the “smart kids.” We affirm our initiates for their excellence in academic achievement, which assumes intelligence. But intelligence is no longer measured by only one standard. Consider the research of Harvard’s Howard Gardner, who in 1983 introduced his theory of multiple intelligences that identified seven different learning styles, challenging educators to acknowledge these differences in learners.

Multiple intelligences describes well the diversity of Phi Kappa Phi members. We are the collegiate honor society that recognizes excellence in all fields of higher education. Our multidisciplinarity offers a canopy that includes students in the humanities, STEM fields, the arts, health professions, education, business, human services, agriculture, and fields yet to be identified.

Wasn’t it smart of our founders to be so inclusive from the beginning? We’ve learned from them to maintain that standard of inclusivity by welcoming diverse institutions to our community of scholars. And we’re still learning.

-Mary Todd, Executive Director

Phi Kappa Phi Announces 2018-19 Circle of Excellence Chapters

Phi Kappa Phi today announced the chapters receiving a 2018-19 Circle of Excellence commendation. The awards—Platinum, Gold, and Silver—are given to the Society’s top chapters that excel in recognizing and promoting academic excellence on their local campus and engaging the community of scholars in service to others.

The Circle of Excellence distinction is a part of the Society’s Circle of Honor program, which was introduced in 2018 and awarded for the first time this year. In its inaugural year, the program named 75 chapters with recognition including 16 as Platinum, 30 as Gold, and 29 as Silver.

“The Circle of Honor program recognizes Phi Kappa Phi chapters that have gone above and beyond to promote academic excellence on their campuses,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd.

By receiving the Circle of Excellence honor, these chapters are recognized as thriving organizations that hold annual initiations, uphold the Society Bylaws, regularly attend chapter training opportunities and submit a chapter-endorsed nominee to the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Program.

Chapters achieving the Circle of Excellence distinction receive:
  • a commendation letter from the Society sent to campus administration
  • special recognition on the Phi Kappa Phi website
  • specially-designed logo for use in chapter communications
  • choice of a cash award or event registration grant

Featured Fellow: Phoebe Stark

Phi Kappa Phi awards nearly $1 million yearly to deserving students and professionals. The Society awards fifty Fellowships of $8,500 each, six at $20,000 each, and two at $35,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Phoebe Stark, a 2018 fellowship recipient, has a career goal as big as the world. She wants to work with National Geographic and research global health. And, with the help of Phi Kappa Phi, she’s one step closer.

Stark is using the $5,000 she received from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi to start medical school at the University of California San Diego.

“It is amazing how much I have learned in the past five months of medical school, but I still have a long way to go,” Stark said. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville grad has also been working with the Free Clinic Project and on several research projects with the Department of Surgery and with high altitude research.

“I am climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this summer and look forward to applying what I have learned through my research to an extreme high altitude experience,” she said.

Stark is no stranger to mountains. While at Tennessee, she was a Kiwi Ambassador to New Zealand, where she advocated for improved education and increased awareness for studying abroad in Oceana.

“I love hiking, exploring, and adventure, and so living in New Zealand was a dream come true,” she said. “I am also a huge Lord of the Rings fan. It was an experience that changed my life goals by igniting my passion for global health and performing medical care and training around the world.”

That’s where National Geographic comes in. Stark wants to team up with the organization to provide health care in underserved communities, including by training new providers in those communities. And even though she’s at the beginning of her career, she hopes the compassion she feels for those communities and all her patients becomes her trademark as she goes forward.

Stark is also thrilled to represent the medical community and Phi Kappa Phi.

“When I first saw the email from Phi Kappa Phi, with ‘Congratulations!’ in the subject line, my initial reaction was shock, then excitement,” she said. “Phi Kappa Phi inducts only the most qualified and successful students, and so I was thrilled to be selected as a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow. I am honored to represent The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi to my school and the medical community.”

Do you want to be one of our next fellowship recipients? Click here to find out how to apply before the April 15 deadline.

Phi Kappa Phi gives 75 Study Abroad Grants annually to students on its chapter campuses. Since its inception in 2001, the program has awarded more than $800,000.

“I am so grateful to Phi Kappa Phi for helping fund my travel to Spain,” said Andi Dahmer, a recipient from Western Kentucky University. “This experience will allow me to live the Spanish language as well as make lasting relationships with the members of my host family, friends in the community, and the students whom I teach.”

The Study Abroad Grants are part of the Society’s robust award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to qualifying students and members through graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

The application period for students to apply for a $1,000 Study Abroad Grant is currently open until March 15. For full eligibility requirements and application instructions, visit www.phikappaphi.org/studyabroad.
