Chapter Update - December 2018

By Kay White
Chapter Development Director

Chapter 336 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico recently presented a successful off-campus event to highlight research ethics and in doing so, made community ties that went beyond the campus. The evening event was co-hosted with the Ponce Athenaeum of Culture, an organization that promotes the rich culture of Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Dr. Rafael Bredy, assistant professor of public health at the Ponce School of Medicine and Health Science, gave a lecture and answered questions about research ethics in medicine. The activity was held at El Candil, an independent workshop, and was attended by about 75 people from all walks of life, despite the rainy evening.

Phi Kappa Phi member Dr. Margarita Rodríguez and Prof. Maria Isabel Chaparro, members of the Ponce Athenaeum of Culture, helped to organize the event, along with Dr. Monica Arroyo, president-elect of chapter 336 and associate professor of chemistry at Pontifical Catholic University.

To share your chapter’s events and updates with the national office, email me at kwhite@phikappaphi.org.

Phi Kappa Phi Announces Love of Learning Recipients

Phi Kappa Phi today announced the Session B recipients of a 2018 Love of Learning Award. The $500 awards were given to 100 Phi Kappa Phi members across the nation.

Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

“What all Phi Kappa Phi members have in common is a love of learning, so it’s fitting that the Society enables learning in a variety of venues,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “The Love of Learning Award does just that by supporting members at all stages of their professional careers.”

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards annually in support of post-baccalaureate professional development. The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals, and a personal statement.

“In accordance with its mission, ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity,’ Phi Kappa Phi strives to cultivate excellence of learning in our society, irrespective of the field of learning,” said Ananth Jillepalli, recipient of a 2018 Love of Learning Award. “I think such interdisciplinary efforts to further learning of humanity is the best part of Phi Kappa Phi.”

Since 1932, Phi Kappa Phi’s award programs have recognized members and students on its chapter campuses for outstanding academic achievement. In addition to the Love of Learning Program, Phi Kappa Phi awards graduate and dissertation fellowships, study abroad grants, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. Nearly $1 million is awarded each year through programs that last year recognized more than 350 individuals.

For the complete list of Love of Learning recipients, click here. The application process for the 2019 Love of Learning Awards will open on December 15, 2018.

Executive Director's Blog - Once upon a Time ...

From the Executive Director
Forum, Winter 2018

“All human beings are practicing historians. As we go through life we present ourselves to others through our life story; as we grow and mature we change that story through different interpretations and different emphasis. We stress different events as having been decisive at different times in our life history and, as we do so, we give those events new meanings. People do not think of this as ‘doing history’; they engage in it often without special awareness. We live our lives; we tell our stories. . . . Our self-representation, the way we define who we are, also takes the shape of the life story we tell. What we remember, what we stress as significant, and what we omit of our past defines our present. . . . This personal history affects our future.”

In these opening words from her essay, “Why History Matters,” in her masterful book of the same name, noted historian Gerda Lerner speaks directly not only to the work of her profession, but also to the work of each of us. At the same time she connects the theme of this issue of the Forum — story — to that of the previous issue — identity.

Consider how much of your daily conversation involves relating personal stories, how the local or national news consists of retelling stories — as I write, of massive flooding in the Carolinas, of local and national politics, of the weekend’s football victories and defeats. Think, too, of how you maintain your family’s story, through photographs in scrapbooks or albums or on your phone. The popularity of ancestry sites has ignited curiosity about family stories that used to be the domain of a solitary uncle or cousin or the dustbin of history.

Stories begin with questions, as every journalist knows. Like journalists, historians are storytellers. We can’t help ourselves — story is embedded in the word history. We tell stories because we believe there is something to be learned from what happened in the past, even if the past was only yesterday.

I’ve become particularly curious lately about the history of Phi Kappa Phi. A story I shared at this summer’s convention arose from my wondering why it was, that in the midst of the Great Depression, the leaders of the Society decided to create an award to support graduate education for Phi Kappa Phi members who were finishing their baccalaureate degrees. I’ll need to do more digging in the archives to learn more, but I did discover the idea was sparked in the office I now hold. The fellowship was created in memory of an early leader of the Society.

Now, nearly ninety years after its conception, the Phi Kappa Phi fellowship is our signature program. In 2019 the three-tiered award will support fifty-eight members as they begin graduate study. The history of the program reflects the ups and downs of the American story over the years as well as the expansion of higher education.

All because, once upon a time . . .
