Phi Kappa Phi Celebrates National Mentoring Month

As a Phi Kappa Phi member, you’ve made great achievements in your academic career. When you look back over your educational journey, who comes to mind? Was it a science or math teacher who encouraged you to keep working hard to master the course material? Was it a professor or faculty member who empowered you to pursue your dream? Most likely, you were lucky enough to have a mentor who inspired and challenged you to be where you are today.

January marks the 15th annual National Mentoring Month—a month dedicated to celebrating mentors, past and present, who have made an impact in the lives of others.

This impact is evident in research that shows when matched through a quality mentoring program, mentors can play a powerful role in providing students with the tools to make responsible decisions and stay focused and engaged in school. Moreover, young adults who had mentors as kids are paying it forward—they are 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities according to The National Mentoring Partnership.

Throughout January, join us as we celebrate the many benefits of mentoring and encourage the mentors making a difference each day.

To share your unique mentoring story, email, and join the conversation on social media by using #PKPMentors and #MentoringWorks.

Volunteer Spotlight – January 2016

Rebecca Luther
The University of Texas at San Antonio

Name: Rebecca Luther

Chapter Position: Vice President

University Position: Director of Communications/Academic Affairs

Years of Service to the Chapter: 3 years

Degree(s)/Discipline: B.A., English

How did you become involved as a chapter officer? Our provost, John Frederick, asked for my assistance with publicity when UTSA's petition to start a Phi Kappa Phi charter on campus was approved in 2011. I thought I would just be writing a press release or two. Next thing I knew I was standing on stage in regalia being sworn in with our other charter officers.

What has your chapter done that has made you proud? Having our students selected for the Fellowship, Love of Learning and Study Abroad grants! I'm also very proud that our very young chapter was recognized as a Chapter of Excellence this year and as a Chapter of Merit the previous two years.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you? For me, "love of learning" means adopting an attitude of humility in everything I do. I've been at UTSA for 15 years, but I'm always learning more about it!

What do you enjoy most about being a chapter officer? My regular job at the university keeps me connected to the faculty; working with Phi Kappa Phi is one of the few opportunities I have to get to know our students. Who are awesome, by the way.

What advice would you give to a new chapter officer?
Treat the folks at headquarters like your new best friends. Because they are.

What are your hobbies?
Arts and crafts with my kids. And way too much binge-watching on Netflix.

Where are you from? Birmingham, Ala.
