Phi Kappa Phi Wins Three AM&P EXCEL Awards

Phi Kappa Phi was recently awarded three EXCEL Awards from Association Media & Publishing (AM&P). The Society was recognized at the 37th Annual EXCEL Awards Gala on Monday, June 26, in Arlington, Virginia. The awards recognize excellence and leadership in nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing and communications.

Phi Kappa Phi received the Gold Award in the promotional membership brochure category for its Make the Most of Your Membership guide. The guide was created as a resource for new members and showcases the variety of benefits available as part of membership in Phi Kappa Phi.

In addition, the Society’s quarterly magazine, Phi Kappa Phi Forum, garnered two Bronze Awards—one for magazine design excellence and one for magazine redesign. After months of planning last year, Phi Kappa Phi unveiled a new design and layout of the Forum with its Spring 2016 issue. If you haven’t already, check out the new look here.

The EXCEL competition saw nearly 830 entries in seven categories ranging from magazines and journals to digital and promotional content. From all entries, 235 were selected as finalists to receive gold, silver or bronze in each category. Click here to see the full list of finalists.

Phi Kappa Phi Announces 2017 Literacy Grant Recipients

Phi Kappa Phi recently announced the 2017 Literacy Grant recipients. The grants of up to $2,500 were awarded in support of 14 literacy projects across the nation.

The Literacy Grant Program, established in 2003, provides funding to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and active members for new and ongoing projects that reinforce part of the Society's mission "to engage the community of scholars in service to others." Drawing from a multidisciplinary society of students and scholars from large and small institutions, the grants help fund projects ranging from traditional reading initiatives to those fostering learning in cultural, digital, financial, health, historical literacy and beyond.

The 2017 recipients and their respective projects are:
  • Michelle Allison, Brookwood's Leveled Reader Library
  • Alexandra Kelly Brooks, Juvenile Detention Center Science Outreach Program
  • Valarie Burke and Katelyn DiBenedetto, Project Transforming Tomorrow
  • Russell Carpenter, Community Reads: Developing Critical Reading and Metacognitive Practices in Students
  • Lesley L. Casarez, Families Who Read Together
  • Rhonda Cooksey, HIKE Up Literacy
  • Dalia Karina Delanuez, Tiny Book House
  • Benjamin Jacob, My Story Matters: A Literacy Project
  • Leah McCurdy, Bringing “To the Mountain!” to Their Ears: A Trilingual Audiobook for Multilingual Literacy and Cultural Heritage Preservation in Belize
  • Tulsi Patel, Para Tu Salud: Una Campaña de Alfabetismo (For Your Health: A Literacy Campaign)
  • Will Porter, Mozambique Music School
  • Muthukrishnan Sathyamoorthy, Born to Read for Minority Children
  • Tettra Scott, Improving Literacy Begins with Parents 2017
  • Emily Taylor Beighley, Paws and Tales

"Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to see a broad diversity in the projects awarded Literacy Grants this year," said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. "Literacy, by definition about more than reading alone, is knowledge of a particular subject. Phi Kappa Phi members’ love of learning is central to the successful transmission of knowledge, whatever the subject."

The winning projects were selected for a grant based on a number of criteria including the project’s scope, student and community involvement, impact, duration and ability to achieve success.

For the Love of Literacy

Between February and April this spring, Phi Kappa Phi held its fourth annual Book Drive Competition. As part of the contest, 22 chapters across the country hosted drives to collect as many books as possible for an organization of their choice.

The book drives were held at both colleges and universities nationwide. Beneficiary organizations chosen by the chapters ranged from schools and libraries to other community organizations such as tutoring and mentoring programs, correctional centers and more.

In all, the participating chapters collected more than 7,000 books and $1,200 in monetary donations!

The four winning chapters whose drives collected the most donations were:
  • California State University, Chico
  • University of Missouri–Kansas City
  • University of Missouri–St. Louis
  • Western Illinois University

These winning chapters will receive a Little Free Library to place at a location of their choice. The Little Free Library is a freestanding box where anyone can donate and borrow books in an effort to promote literacy throughout communities—a prize that fits well with Phi Kappa Phi’s love of learning and literacy.

“I'm so happy that I was invited to be a part of this project because I can see that it has and will continue to make a difference in people's lives – one book at a time,” said Rebecca Meza, student vice president of the University of Missouri–St. Louis chapter.

Other chapters that hosted a book drive as part of the competition include Caldwell University, Eastern Kentucky University, Fort Hayes State University, Framingham State University, George Mason University, Ithaca College, Jacksonville University, Louisiana State University, Lycoming College, Murray State University, North Dakota State University, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, University of North Carolina Charlotte, University of Florida, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, The University of Tennessee, University of Wyoming and Youngstown State University.

Since its creation, Phi Kappa Phi’s annual book drive competition has donated more than 35,000 books to organizations both locally and abroad. Chapters interested in learning more about the contest or how to host their own book drives or service projects can contact Kay White.

Phi Kappa Phi Announces Love of Learning Award Recipients

Phi Kappa Phi recently announced the Session A recipients of a 2017 Love of Learning Award. The $500 awards were given to 100 Phi Kappa Phi members across the nation.

Click here to see the complete list of recipients from Session A of the program.

Awarded twice a year, the Love of Learning Awards are designed to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members including graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, travel related to teaching and research, career development and more.

“What all Phi Kappa Phi members have in common is a love of learning, so it’s fitting that the Society should enable learning in a variety of venues,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “The Love of Learning Award does just that by supporting members at all stages of their professional careers.”

The selection process for a Love of Learning Award is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, intended use of award funds as it relates to academic and career goals, and a personal statement.

Established in 2007, the Love of Learning Program gives 200 awards annually in support of post-baccalaureate professional development. In addition, the Society awards $1.4 million each biennium to qualifying students and members through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

The application process for Session B will open July 1, 2017. Learn more here
