Chapter Update – March 2018

By Kay White
Chapter Development Director

Chapter 294 at Slippery Rock University utilized social media in a fun way to spread awareness of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and its awards program.

Chapter officers and other active members posted various, large Phi Kappa Phi posters around campus and challenged students to take a selfie with or a picture of any of the Society posters. The photo contest announcement was posted on the chapter’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts with the motivation to increase the presence or exposure of the chapter during the period between when the invitations were sent out to qualifying students until a week before the initiation ceremony.

All members and newly invited students were instructed to find a poster on campus, take a selfie in front of it, and post the picture on one of Slippery Rock University’s Phi Kappa Phi social media pages. At the end of the time period, the chapter held two drawings – one from posts by current student members (faculty and staff were invited to participate but not eligible for the gift) and one from all those invited to join Phi Kappa Phi, whether they decided to accept or not.

During the contest, chapter president Laurel Patterson sent out the location of a few more of the posters with reminders to participate. She said of the visibility project, “I believe that keeping The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi in front of the campus community is an important way to increase awareness. It doesn’t have to be a publicized event. It can be anything that keeps the organization out there. The rest happens naturally.”

At the end of the submission period, winners were drawn from each category and they received gift cards, which were announced on the social media pages.

One of the winners was Erin O’Connor who posted her selfie on Facebook.

This is just one of many ways to get more information out to the campus! If you have ideas that have worked for you chapter and would like to share, please contact Kay White at kwhite@phikappaphi.org.

Member Spotlight – Phail Wynn Jr.

For most people, retirement is a time for rest and relaxation. For Phail Wynn Jr., his first attempt at retirement was only a brief respite which lasted one single day before he immediately started work as vice president of the Office of Durham and Regional Affairs at Duke University. Now, after a decade of work with the university, Wynn once again plans for retirement in June.

Wynn completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1969 and enrolled in the Army, where he did a tour in Vietnam. While serving at Fort Bragg, he enrolled as a graduate student at North Carolina State University. There he completed his master’s degree and doctorate and was inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Wynn joined the staff at Durham Technical Community College in 1977 and became president in 1980; the first African-American community college president in the North Carolina system. He recalls his time there fondly. “I was engaged in the noblest form of recycling – to provide the first, second, third or last opportunities for adult learners to achieve their goals or get on the right pathway to become lifelong learners. Providing open access, low barrier opportunities for learning was something I was proud of in my community college days,” Wynn shared.

In the nearly 28 years he served as president, Wynn repeatedly shared one of his favorite quotes at commencement exercises: “The road to knowledge has no end.” The sentiment and his work impacted the college so strongly that the quote was emblazoned on a plaque mounted to the campus building named in his honor, the Phail Wynn Jr. Student Services Center. The quote would hold true for Wynn when he retired in 2007 and headed down the road to Duke University.

During his time at the university’s Office of Durham and Regional Affairs, Wynn worked to build the relationship and programs between the university and the surrounding communities. In the ten years under his guidance, the office has created partnerships to improve economic and community development, public education and quality of life through civic engagement initiatives.

His plans for retirement include travel, golf and catching up on his reading. “I have 15 years of accumulated reading which I plan to plunge into. I’m an old-style hardbound book reader, and I’ve been collecting books so I can annotate them and put them back on the shelf.”

Wynn takes great pride in his membership in the Society. “I knew the prestige of Phi Kappa Phi and decided to embrace the honor once I was inducted. On my résumé, I proudly indicate that I’m a member,” he shared. Wynn became a life member in 1995.

In his time as a member of the Society – following in the footsteps of his professor mother, Valree Wynn, who is also a member – Wynn has led a life that lives up to the Society’s motto: “Let the love of learning rule humanity.” He noted, “For all of us as members, the important thing for us to spread is the notion of lifelong learning for all. So when we have the opportunity, that should be our mission in life – to encourage those who have completed terminal degrees, not completed any degrees at all, or those in the middle. We should advocate to them the importance and necessity of embracing lifelong learning.”

Executive Director's Blog - Women Hold up Half the Sky

From the Executive Director
Forum, Spring 2018

Some years ago, while teaching a women’s studies class, I noticed several male students looking through the window of the classroom door. They later said they were curious about what went on in women’s studies, since the enrollment was overwhelmingly female. I often wished that more men had brought their curiosity into the classroom rather than speculating from the other side of the door. I still do.

The prevailing belief at the time – has it changed? – was that women’s studies classes were sites of male-bashing, radical feminist proselytizing, and uncompromising demands for women’s rights. In reality, faculty worked to bring hope into our classrooms, as the content could be downright depressing. Stories of rape as an instrument of war; of legal, cultural and religious discrimination; of economic hardship and physical abuse offered little to celebrate. The few glimmers of light were found in women’s voices, activism, and steadfastness in the face of challenging circumstances.

Such stories of struggle are the stuff of history. Consider, if you will, a bit of recent American history.

1992 was declared the Year of the Woman due to the unparalleled number of women elected to both houses of Congress. The dramatic voter response was credited to women’s unhappiness over the confirmation of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court despite allegations of sexual harassment brought by Anita Hill during the period both worked for the federal government. Only a year earlier, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Susan Faludi had written Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women, which argued that the gains made possible by the second wave of feminism of the 1960s and 1970s were meeting resistance from the American media.

Historian William Chafe, who considers women’s progress the most significant change of the twentieth century, describes this in a word: paradox. Steps forward were met by the backlash Faludi described, which in turn saw the advances in congressional representation. Such cycles are not atypical of reform movements in American history. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Fast forward twenty-five years to 2017, and the unprecedented engagement of women in activism, many in response to the results of the 2016 presidential election. Beginning with the Women’s March last January that brought millions of people into the streets of cities around the world, women raised their voices and declared their resistance to the new administration. Many decided to run for office.

In the fall of 2017, another activist movement evolved after public allegations of sexual harassment were brought against media moguls, anchormen, political and sports figures. The #MeToo hash tag spread like wildfire across social media, revealing the extent of women’s (and some men’s) experiences with harassment in the workplace.

Today, despite women comprising the majority of undergraduate students (that’s been true since 1979), graduate students, and medical and law students, we still learn daily of domestic violence, workplace discrimination, pay differentials, and double standards. The number of women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies hovers just over six percent. And no woman has yet been elected president of the United States.

The Chinese have a saying, attributed to Mao Zedong, “Women hold up half the sky.” Women globally have taken that expression to heart in their efforts not only to become more involved and engaged through activism, but in acknowledgement that it truly does take all of us – women and men together, each with our own individual gifts -- to ensure the future for generations to come.

-Mary Todd, Executive Director

Beyond Books: Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grants

Established in 2003, Phi Kappa Phi’s Literacy Grant program was created as a way to help members and chapters champion initiatives that recognize the many facets of literacy. The grants, of up to $2,500, help fund projects ranging from traditional reading initiatives to those fostering learning in cultural, digital, financial, health, historical literacy and beyond.

Benjamin Jacob, a 2017 Literacy Grant winner, joined forces with his fellow Phi Kappa Phi members at Brigham Young University and My Story Matters, a nonprofit foundation, to publish the stories of children who have unique life experiences such as being a refugee or immigrant.

Jacob and other student volunteers met with refugee children in their community on March 10, 2018, to get to know them and their stories. “Stories inspire hope and validation,” shared Jacob. The My Story Matters project validates their experiences by learning their stories and using them to create personalized books, like memoirs, to give them. The Phi Kappa Phi members will work with the My Story Matters team to interview the children as well as assist with the writing, formatting, and photography for the stories.

For this Literacy Grant winner, the opportunity to meet, befriend and learn from these children is a “humbling and humanizing experience,” and he encourages others to apply. “Phi Kappa Phi is totally committed to improving literacy and communication around the world and this grant is strong proof,” he said.

Read more about the Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grants program and see what other literacy initiatives are being supported by last year’s winners. The deadline to apply for a 2018 Literacy Grant is April 1.

Featured Fellow: Megan Hunt

Phi Kappa Phi’s Featured Fellow for March is Megan Hunt, a 2017 Marcus L. Urann Fellow. Megan was awarded the Urann Fellowship as an undergraduate at Clemson University and went on to pursue an M.D. at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

As an undergraduate, Megan pursued a degree in biochemistry with minors in modern languages and political science, and set her sights on a career in medicine and policy. She participated in research projects, shadowed medical professionals in the U.S., and volunteered in Peru, Nicaragua and Uganda. In addition, she rallied on Capitol Hill and met with local congressman on issues relating to healthcare access. These interactions intensified her desire to help serve those who lack access to healthcare as both a physician and leader of policy change. She plans to continue serving as a voice in the fight for healthcare access.

The deadline to apply for one of 57 Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships is April 16, 2018. The Society will award six $15,000 awards and 51 $5,000 awards to students nationwide.

Since its creation in 1932, the Fellowship Program has become one of the Society's most visible and financially well-supported endeavors, allocating $345,000 annually to deserving students for first-year graduate or professional study. The competition is open to all active Phi Kappa Phi members who meet the eligibility requirements.

“It is such a great honor to receive the Urann Fellowship,” shared Megan. “I am so thankful for the support I received from my Clemson chapter and for the opportunity that Phi Kappa Phi has provided me.”

Internship Opportunities, Deadlines and Scholarships

Are you interested in a DC-based internship? Phi Kappa Phi offers resources to assist members with finding the right internship and our partners provide members the opportunity to apply for scholarships worth up to $2,500. These programs provide members with opportunities to explore career options, while enhancing their leadership development potential.

The Washington Internship Institute’s semester-long academic internship program is designed to provide students with practical, hands-on experience and academically rigorous courses emphasizing public service, leadership and professional development. Members of Phi Kappa Phi are eligible to receive a $500 scholarship for this program. Select Phi Kappa Phi on your Intern Profile and the Washington Internship Institute will use this information to verify your membership. Visit WIIDC.org for more information on the programs and application information.

Phi Kappa Phi members are invited to apply for DC Internships summer and semester programs based in Washington, DC. Sponsored by The Fund of American Studies, each program includes academic credit through George Mason University, an internship placement, furnished housing, guest lectures and site briefings as well as professional development and networking events. Three scholarships in the amount of $2,500 have been reserved for members of Phi Kappa Phi. Applicants for these scholarships should apply before the priority deadline. Members not selected for one of these scholarships will be reviewed for awards from The Fund for American Studies' general scholarship fund. Members must denote their Society membership within their online application materials. Visit DCinternships.org for more information on the programs and application information.
