The semifinalists were assessed on the project’s ability to achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes to create systemic large-scale change. The six semifinalist institutions include:

Volunteer Spotlight – March 2016

Cynthia Fitzpatrick
The University of Findlay

Name: Cynthia Fitzpatrick

Chapter Position: Past President

University Position: Clinical Experiential Specialist for The College of Pharmacy

Years of Service to the Chapter: 3 years

Degree(s)/Discipline: M.Ed. and Certifications for Administration

How did you become involved as a chapter officer? In 2012 the President-elect left the university and there was a year left in the term. A message came from the president asking if anyone was interested in the second year of the term and then following that with two years of president. I answered the call and was chosen to fill that position.

What has your chapter done that has made you proud? Our chapter has received the Chapter of Excellence Award for 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. Before that we were Chapter of Merit in 2011-12. The chapter was installed on campus in the spring of 2010 and we have been honored in some way almost every year. We have a core of officers that are fabulous and work very hard.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
It is a true honor to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi. It was a wonderful experience to be initiated and work with others that value academics. It is important to value education and this group on our campus does just that. I have attended a national convention and everyone there valued education, and it was a truly uplifting experience.

What do you enjoy most about being a chapter officer? I enjoy working with other officers to make our chapter the best it can be. We enjoy meeting and brainstorming ideas to advance our chapter. It is also fun to bring in new members and to preside at initiation.

What advice would you give to a new chapter officer?
Advice for a new officer is to always be willing to think outside of the box. Get your ideas out there and then find ways, with the help of others, to make those ideas happen. Always have a smile ready for a new member and remember everyone has great ideas.

What are your hobbies?
I enjoy traveling, reading and cross-stitch projects. But most of all, I enjoy attending programs and watching my grandchildren participate.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Findlay, Ohio. I lived in Solon, Ohio, for 7 years (a suburb of Cleveland) from 1983 through 1991.

See Cynthia's résumé.

Hillsdale College to Install Phi Kappa Phi Chapter

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will establish its newest chapter at Hillsdale College today, March 1, during a ceremonial installation. Hillsdale will become the 334th chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, which was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine.

The college was approved to establish a chapter by the Society’s board of directors.

Officers elected by the chartering group to serve the newly installed chapter include President Korey Maas, President-elect Paul Hosmer, Secretary Lorraine Murphy and Treasurer David C. Murphy.

Each year, approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni are initiated into the Society, which has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students, along with faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
