Chapters Host Book Drives Across the Nation

Between February and April this spring, the Phi Kappa Phi Council of Students held its annual Book Drive Competition. As part of the contest, 24 chapters across the country hosted drives to collect as many books as possible for an organization of their choice.

The book drives were held at both colleges and universities, small and large, representing all five Phi Kappa Phi regions. Beneficiary organizations chosen by the chapters ranged from schools to libraries to other community organizations including food shelters and tutoring and mentoring programs.

In all, the participating chapters collected more than 14,000 books!

The three chapters whose book drives collected the most donations were named as winners:

  • North Dakota State University
  • Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
  • University of Missouri–St. Louis

These chapters will receive a “Little Free Library” and $150 for personalizing the Little Free Library. The concept of the Little Free Library is a “’take a book, return a book’ gathering place” in a community—a prize that fits in well with Phi Kappa Phi’s love of learning and love of literacy. The chapters will decide where to place their Little Free Libraries somewhere on their campuses or in their local communities.

Other chapters that hosted a book drive as part of the contest include Andrews University; Arizona State University; California State University, Fresno; California State University, Sacramento; Clemson University; Delta State University; Duquesne University; Eastern Kentucky University; Elmhurst College; Ithaca College; Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania; Louisiana State University; Marshall University; Murray State University; Nicholls State University; The University of Southern Mississippi; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; University of Louisiana at
Lafayette; University of South Alabama; and University of West Alabama.

Chapters interested in learning more about the contest or how to host their own book drives or service projects can contact Jami Prince.

Phi Kappa Phi Wins Three APEX Awards

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi recently earned three national awards in the Annual APEX Awards for Publication Excellence. APEX awards, now in its 27th year, are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and overall communications excellence.

Phi Kappa Phi Forum, the Society’s flagship publication, garnered a Grand Award, the highest prize, in the Magazines, Journals & Tabloids category. The spring 2014 edition—“Faith”—received the award. Only 82 Grand Awards were given out of nearly 1,900 total submissions.

In addition to the Grand Award, the summer 2014 edition—“Honor”—won an Award of Excellence in the Magazine, Journals & Tabloids Writing category.

The Society’s 2013 Annual Report, produced by the Phi Kappa Phi Marketing Department, also received an Award of Excellence in the Annual Reports category. Titled “Opening Doors,” the report highlights the Society’s accomplishments of the 2013 calendar year through an exciting visual design that includes photos, member and award winner testimonials, donor recognition, chapter service highlights and more.

“We are honored to be recognized in the APEX competition for the seventh straight year,” said Phi Kappa Phi Chief Marketing Officer Traci Navarre. “These awards, decided by experts in the communications field, celebrate our continued efforts to provide publications that both inform and engage the Society’s members.”

The APEX competition annually recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports, brochures and websites. Learn more at

Volunteer Spotlight – June 2015

Keisha Martin
University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Name: Keisha Martin

Chapter Position: Chapter Administrator

Years of Service to the Chapter: 3 years

Degree(s)/Discipline: Business Administration

How did you become involved as a Phi Kappa Phi volunteer? I became involved with Phi Kappa Phi by virtue of occupying the position I currently work in at my university. Phi Kappa Phi is a major part of my full-time job duties and I really enjoy working with the Society. I welcomed the opportunity to become more hands-on with students when assuming this role.

What has Phi Kappa Phi done that has made you proud? Phi Kappa Phi Society Headquarters has been a great source of knowledge for our chapter in improving operations. I am proud of the progress our chapter has made over the last few years. As a result of the patience and invaluable assistance provided by Society Headquarters, our chapter is growing by leaps and bounds. Membership numbers have steadily increased each year and our chapter has been presented the Chapter of Merit Award.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you? Phi Kappa Phi means a lot to me because I am involved in an effort which directly awards students for academic excellence. Working with Phi Kappa Phi makes me feel like I am doing my part in encouraging the growth and perseverance of young adults, most of whom are shining stars and destined for greatness!

What do you enjoy most about being a Phi Kappa Phi volunteer? I enjoy making life easier for our chapter's executive board by anticipating their needs and completing tasks for them ahead of time. This practice allows more time for the board to develop new strategies which in turn strengthens our chapter to better benefit our members.

What advice would you give to a new Phi Kappa Phi volunteer? Working with Phi Kappa Phi is very rewarding. Increasing student interaction and providing them with bountiful knowledge about Phi Kappa Phi is important. Students are inquisitive by nature and engagement is required in order to pique their interests. Be creative and thorough in your attempts at communicating with students. As a volunteer, you provide the first impression of the chapter and may ultimately be the determining factor of whether an invitation to join is accepted or not. Volunteers are the face of Phi Kappa Phi, so wear it well!

What are your hobbies? My husband and I love spending time with our dog, watching Jeopardy and Family Feud on weeknights and catching up on the latest box office releases on weekends.

Where are you from? South Carolina
