Nazareth College Installs Phi Kappa Phi Chapter

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society—established its newest chapter at Nazareth College yesterday, January 9, during a ceremonial installation. Nazareth College became the 320th chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, which was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine.

Nazareth was approved to establish a chapter by the Society's board of directors in October 2012. Each year, approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni are initiated into the Society, which has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

“The commitment to excellence at Nazareth College is evident in the number of scholarships available to students, as well as through the presence of the college’s strong honors program,” said Society President Dr. Diane G. Smathers. “All of us at Phi Kappa Phi are excited about the addition of the Nazareth chapter and look forward to developing a strong working relationship with the chapter.”

Officers elected by the chartering group of the Nazareth chapter to serve the newly installed chapter include President Dr. MaryAnn Bush, Vice President Dr. Paula Brown, Secretary Dr. Matthew John Temple and Treasurer Dr. William L. Hallahan.

The new chapter will initiate students for the first time on March 22, 2013. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students, along with faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
