Two Phi Kappa Phi Members Receive Mark Twain Awards for Travel

Two Phi Kappa Phi members, Sabrina Bradford and Rory Weier, recently were selected as the 2013 winners of The Mark Twain Awards for Travel, which support students who wish to enrich their education through exposure to people and places they otherwise would not encounter.

Bradford, a recent graduate of The University of Mississippi, will use the award to travel to Peru for an internship. "Mark Twain was quoted to have said, 'I have never let schooling interfere with my education.' The value in this award is that it honors these sentiments, allowing us to further our education for the sake of curiosity and learning and reducing financial barriers,” said Bradford.

Weier, a Ph.D. student studying public health at The Ohio State University, will use the award to attend a conference. "The Mark Twain Award for Travel will give me the opportunity to meet innovators in the fields of Geography and Public Health…and enhance my understanding of the intersection between place and health,” said Weier.

The Mark Twain Awards for Travel are funded by Letterbanc, the leading application platform for academic awards, admissions, and employment, and co-sponsored by Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board.

Volunteer Spotlight – July 2013

Dr. Clay Motley
Western Kentucky University

Clay Motley

Chapter Position: Chapter President

Years of Service to the Chapter: 3

University Position: Associate Director, The Honors College at WKU

Degree(s)/Discipline: Ph.D., English, University of South Carolina

How did you become involved as a chapter officer?
Our chapter at WKU had not initiated any students in several years and faculty involvement was fairly low. I wanted WKU's excellent students to have the opportunity to be recognized for their achievements and to benefit from membership in Phi Kappa Phi.

What has your chapter done that has made you proud?
Every year our initiation ceremony has become more poignant and meaningful to the students, parents, and faculty in attendance. The initiation ceremony is the first formal experience the students have as members of Phi Kappa Phi, so I think it is very important to set the appropriate tone. We are getting better at doing that.

What does Phi Kappa Phi mean to you?
As I say during our initiation ceremony, Phi Kappa Phi is for curious, passionate people who believe learning is a life-long endeavor. I am proud to be a part of that venture and to encourage our students to as well.

What do you enjoy most about being a chapter officer?
The 2012 Convention was a highlight for me. It was great to network with faculty, staff, and students from across the country. I got some great ideas for our own chapter, but more importantly the Convention helped me see Phi Kappa Phi as an international organization. It gave me the "big picture" beyond our chapter boundaries.

What advice would you give to a new chapter officer?
Your chapter will only grow and thrive if you continue to innovate. You can't rest on what you've done before, but instead you need to continuously look to improve and think of new ideas on how to accomplish your chapter's goals.

What are your hobbies?
Cooking, running, and enjoying music.

Where are you from?
Richmond, Ky.
