Phi Kappa Phi Installs Chapter 340 at Saint Mary's College of California

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will install its 340th chapter at Saint Mary's College of California today, January 25. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.

The installation of the Saint Mary’s chapter comes after a thorough chartering process and approval from the Society’s board of directors. To be eligible, an institution must be a regionally accredited four-year college or university with an established reputation of excellence and an expressed commitment to upholding the values of the Society.

“Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to welcome Saint Mary’s College of California to its growing community of scholars,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd. “Saint Mary’s commitment to providing a transformative student experience that is both challenging and inclusive reflects the college’s longstanding culture of excellence.”

Officers elected by the chartering group to serve the newly installed chapter include President Richard Lemberg, President-elect Jim Sauerberg, Secretary Emily Hause, Treasurer David W. Bird and Public Relations Officer Michael K. McKeon.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society—one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines and inducts approximately 30,000 new members each year. Membership is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students, along with faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Are You a Mentor? Share Your Story!

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” This quote from Phil Collins probably rings true for anyone who has ever served as a mentor.

Mentoring provides a shared opportunity for learning and growth. In fact, many mentors say they are surprised and grateful for the chance to mentor because the experience is more rewarding than they imagined.

Today is “I Am a Mentor Day”—a day dedicated to celebrating mentors as part of National Mentoring Month.

Are you a mentor? If so, tell us in the comments below about your experience. Your story may inspire others to get involved and make an impact in the lives of others.

If you’re not yet a mentor, check out the below resources to help you get started:

Phi Kappa Phi Celebrates National Mentoring Month

As a Phi Kappa Phi member, you’ve made great achievements in your academic career. When you look back over your educational journey, who comes to mind? Was it a science or math teacher who encouraged you to work hard to master the course material? Was it a professor or faculty member who empowered you to pursue your dream? Most likely, you were lucky enough to have a mentor who inspired and challenged you to be where you are today.

January marks the annual National Mentoring Month—a month dedicated to celebrating mentors, past and present, who have made an impact in the lives of others.

This impact is evident in research that shows when matched through a quality mentoring program, mentors can play a powerful role in providing students with the tools to stay focused and engaged in school. According to The National Mentoring Partnership, young adults who have mentors are 55 percent more likely to enroll in college.

Join us throughout January as we celebrate the benefits of mentoring as well as the mentors who make a difference each day.

To share your unique mentoring story, email news@phikappaphi.org, and join the conversation on social media by using #PKPMentors and #MentoringWorks.
